Critic Reviews for Das Boot Season 1

All Critics (34) | Top Critics (15)

Submarine warfare is cramped, dirty, and dangerous even without enemy attacks, and Das Boot brings all the tension and frustrations to gritty life.

May 20, 2019 | Full Review…

Each episode is like a shot of something very illegal to my arm. Played in more than one language, by an international cast, the miracle is, moreover, that it also allows you to feel vaguely hopeful about the future for whole minutes at a time.

Feb 6, 2019 | Full Review…

Both the movie and the series are drawn from Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 novel - allowing "Das Boot" to broaden its action well beyond the U-boat.

Jul 9, 2019 | Full Review…

The narrative of Das Boot hews so slavishly to convention that one can basically game out the season by the end of episode three or four. And at that point, one has to ask: Why tell this story at all?

Jun 21, 2019 | Full Review…

Each character has layers beneath what we first see. Some scenes are blunt in their depiction of violence - there's sex and nudity too - and throughout there's a livid tension.

Jun 21, 2019 | Full Review…

The series is nowhere near as grabby. But it does explore similar themes, which are still worth engaging... again, for those willing to make the effort.

Slow and steady WWII drama aims for depth over flair.

Aug 14, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

With the focus constantly shifting between the characters and conflicts in all sections of the ship, this story is a constantly surprising and a thoroughly satisfying tour of duty.

Aug 12, 2019 | Full Review…

The budget is big, the scenery is immersive, and the acting is competent.

Jun 19, 2019 | Full Review…

Not a masterpiece like the original, but if you like war shows, it's a doozy.

Jun 19, 2019 | Full Review…

The Das Boot series is just flat-out boring.

Audience Reviews for Das Boot: Season 1

  • Aug 01, 2020
Great series. Nice to see a high quality and gritty non English show. Kept my attention throughout.
  • May 23, 2020
This was an unexpectedly great series. The story is strong throughout, many unexpected storylines throughout, and some great submarine action. Recommended!
  • Aug 18, 2019
Great cast, fresh plot, fantastic costumes. I am claustrophobic already. No wonder why Winston Churchill feared the "U-boot" more than anything else.
  • Jul 15, 2019
Das Boot manages to be a war story, a thriller and a love story all at once, as it takes nuanced looks at complicated relationships throughout. International series are not for everybody, particularly those who don't want to bother with subtitles, but Das Boot not only mixes that up rather cleverly but is just a flat-out entertaining, well-told drama that's filled with surprises. Das Boot possesses the atmospheric pressure of its cinematic forebear while adding new depth to its compelling ensemble, making for a riveting international production.

Really liked the atmosphere more than the plot. It is more of a period piece about life in occupied France in some ways. Liked the French and German language with sub-titles, Interesting characters and scenes. If you like foreign films this won't disappoint.
  • Jun 23, 2019
It should be re-titled "Das Bullshit" or "Lesbian Love in the French Resistance."
  • Jun 22, 2019
Unlike the gritty realistic original series, this modern, politically correct, technically inaccurate, history revisionist, pulp nonsense has a plot so full of holes that it should have remained submerged..
  • Mar 27, 2019
I remember my dad loving this when I was a kid, so was curious to see where they went with it. Turns out, they did a pretty good job. I particularly enjoy how unashamedly multilingual it is. It just feel right to me, the seamless slipping between languages. More broadly, the plot hit the usual highs and lows, with modern sensibilities, a powerful reminder of how thankful many of us should be not to be living through that awful era.
  • Mar 21, 2019
Like an ice cream Sunday with a cherry on the top Das Boot looks good, smells good, tastes good but is not really good for your health. For the most part the casting is competent, the cinematography not clumsy, but the plot and dialog are insipid, vacuous, vile, and insulting to the viewer's intelligence (whether they realize it or not). The writers and others responsible for this dreck seem to been inspired by the Matrix and Terminator films with their post apocalyptic patois - Particularly the subplot involving the Sarah Connor / Ripley / Matrix chick heroin (sic). Not even the metronomic gratuitous lingering shots of breasts, sexual violence, and lesbian sex stir purient interest.

A brilliant series of unmissable action and suspense. Its great that they have adapted this new version with both land and maratime story lines. A tremendous cast that draw you in from the start. Watch all episodes within a few days as I could not stop watching it! Roll on season two which I hear has only recently been commissioned.
