DAVE: Season 1 (2020)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

Though Lil Dicky fans will find much to like, Dave's superficial plotting and juvenile sense of humor is unlikely to garner any new love.

Critic Reviews for DAVE Season 1

All Critics (18) | Top Critics (10)

Dave turns out to be a strong, episodic platform for [Burd's] persona, providing that the show doesn't stray too far from the rap skills that can turn a meme into a zeitgeist.

Mar 3, 2020 | Full Review…

"Dave" is not for everyone but there absolutely is a crowd for this shrewd, often funny, and scorchingly vulgar new comedy.

Top Critic

Dave can turn into the douchey, selfish, oh-too-typical dude he's supposed to be parodying, which makes "Dave" harder to watch. A few simple, silly episodes feel a little too phoned in, but they could just be practice rounds as the show finds its feet.

Top Critic

Feels somewhat like being trapped with a terrible party companion, one who both fails to meet the energy of the occasion and is an oversharer besides. It comes bearing at once too much information and too little else of what makes television work.

Feb 28, 2020 | Full Review…

Dave is funny, but maybe not for everyone.

May 15, 2020 | Full Review…

He is idiotic, charming, self-centred, socially inept yet gloriously open to new ideas and experiences.

May 12, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

In general, I like the protagonists and their dynamics. But perhaps the plot and humor don't completely fit with them. [Full Review in Spanish]

Jun 8, 2020 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Dave Burd made a whole show about how "Dave Burd" has a terrible penis.

Mar 3, 2020 | Rating: 55/100 | Full Review…

It's the reason that the comedy works, in a slacker hit-and-miss kind of way, because you know if he ever dropped the satirical schtick, Burd could drop some proper hard stuff.

May 11, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Shockingly, "Dave" paves its own path to create a meaningful and very funny comedy.

Mar 21, 2020 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

There's a goofy charm very much like the central figure of Dave.

Mar 6, 2020 | Full Review…

Once you get over the pretty juvenile premise... you kind of got all the bleached-out Atlanta homage of Dave has to offer.

Dave is a hilarious comedy that keeps you laughing throughout the whole season. The episodes contain great characters, witty humor, and good beats. I can't wait for season 2.

While some of the later plot is predictable mainly Dave's future relationship status the shows humor works for me. Episodes like What Wood you Wear and Hypospadias are my favorites. While the latter has jokes that land perfectly for me the other focuses on two side characters that honestly I enjoy more than Dave himself. The show is funny and interesting, more than it should be for someone who is not a fan of most modern Hip Hop artists but still has its problem areas like its predictability. On the other hand episodes like the finale can be unpredictable in the dumbest way possible with Dave's song about prison kicking off the finale with an unexpected and ridiculous story Dave tells through his song. The show is certainly a interesting way to pass the time and a fun watch I would recommend it if it sounds up your alley or maybe if its not as well, its certainly very odd.

The first scene of the show, Dave is at the doctor talking about his penis. It was a little off as a joke, but had a heartfelt feel to it. The show got better and better after that. Examining all sorts of relationships, dynamics, and personalities on the show. It had dry humor, mixed with romance and connection, and real life issues. The show has a new place in my heart.

just like Lil dicky's music, the show has decent production and some big-name cameos but just like his music, the show has unfunny humor and the belief that the content is a lot more clever than it actually is. If humor surrounding penises and sex than the show is for you but if you are looking for something with substance and cleverness than you will be very let down

Dave is a fantastic FXX series. Lil Dicky was awesome as well as his main title character.
  • Jun 09, 2020
This is one of the best TV shows I've ever seen, honestly. Just watch it.

The funniest new sitcom in several years. Truly unique and left me smiling over and over again.
  • May 31, 2020
Fun, entertaining show. Definitely worth checking out.

It took a few episodes but after that the show definitely hit its stride. Dave is pretty hilarious and the acting is good for a comedy especially his gf. The season finale was EPIC. I've watched millions of hours of TV in my life time and I've never seen an entire episode comprised of the main character rapping and acting out what is going on in the song. It was like a music video except it was much more than that because it is the length of an entire episode. I've noticed reviewers comparing this show to Curb Your Enthusiasm but I don't think the humor on Dave is the same... Larry David literally writes shows about nothing and everyday little things. I wouldn't say Dave is about nothing, the entire show is about him trying to make it as a white rapper. I would say his show is better than his rapping and music though. The better comparison is a white version of Atlanta but definitely more goofy.

I like it. It is weirdly fun and I don't even know rap. :)
