Its funny at times, but more often than not it meanders to the point of boredom.
Chappelle's most intimate work to date.
The best stand up special I have watched in a long time. Ignore the tomatometer and the critic's who take jokes out of context in an attempt to push their own opinions on others before anyone can make a judgement for themselves. These two sets are a breath of fresh air in a suffocated time of censorship and hate.
The only stand up to ever give me chills. In the best way possible. And I watch a LOT of stand up. Dave - you absolutely slayed. 100% approval & 100% necessary for everyone to watch.
He's clearly smart and I once thought he was funny and talented. Too bad his comedy is wrapped in a misogyny and a clearly distorted perspective. He makes fun of women in Hollywood for not having thicker skin (Weinstein, Cosby, etc) as he describes fleeing Hollywood for 10 years because he was treated like a broken whore. Brother, grab your ankles. As long as you forgive abuse against women, you're the last whore in the room....one with no humility or awareness of the problem.
Powerful. Thought provoking.
Hilarious, but not as consistently so as his earlier stuff
A 2017 stand-up special by comedian Dave Chappelle, produced by Netflix. Covers ground that fans of Dave Chappelle will be used to, e.g. race issues, plus looks into the current political situation in the US.
If youre a fan of Dave Chappelle, as I am, youll know what to expect biting, irreverent, fearless humour, delivered in distinctive colourful style. Screamingly funny at times, making you think it was the early 2000s all over again.
However, not always funny, unfortunately. Chappelle goes into US politics and often its more a rant than joke. Even his jokes on the subject seem predictable and below him. He should just have stuck to his usual subjects and stayed clear of politics.
Ultimately, very funny, but in spells quite uneven. Too many dull bits to be brilliant. Unlike his earlier stuff, which never had an unfunny moment.
1) ANY FAN OF DAVE CHAPPELLE'S BRUTALLY HONEST STYLE OF COMEDY CAN'T MISS THIS SPECIAL. THIS IS AMONG MY FAVORITE OF THE NETFLIX SPECIALS HE HAS POSTED RECENTLY AND I FOUND MYSELF LAUGHING CONSISTENTLY. NEAR THE END, THE JOKES DO BECOME A LITTLE REPETITIVE WHICH MIGHT NOT APPEAL TO EVERYONE, BUT FOR ME, IT WAS HILARIOUS AND WELL SAID. CHAPPELLE FINISHES THIS ONE ON A MORE EMOTIONAL NOTE AND SHOWS THAT HE IS STILL A MASTER AT BALANCING HUMOR AND HEART.
2) OF THE TWO NEWEST SPECIALS, THIS ONE IS NOT QUITE AS MEMORABLE AS THE OTHER. THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT ISN'T FUNNY. ON THE CONTRARY, IT'S HILARIOUS AND HAD ME LAUGHING HARD. IT DOES FEEL A LITTLE SHORT BUT CHAPPELLE'S COMMENTARY ON RECENT EVENTS IS TOO MUCH FUN TO WATCH. ANY FAN OF HIS TYPE OF HUMOR HAS TO CHECK THIS NETFLIX SPECIAL OUT.
equanimity 4.5 hysterical, clever and awesome
the bird revelation 3.5. not nearly as funny but i like a lot of what he said and his views on things
Clearly Rotten Tomatoes "expert" / "top critics" have no clue when it comes to comedy. Both these stand ups were not only funny but quite thought provoking. However quite a few of the critics cannot determine subtle messages and so they fail to recognise the genius at work.
