Dawson's Creek: Season 1 (1998)

SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Uncommonly articulate and introspective for their age, these Capeside high schoolers bring real heart to the first season of Dawson's Creek.

Critic Reviews for Dawson's Creek Season 1

All Critics (11) | Top Critics (6)

It's overly dramatic, sometimes sappy, and you're eyes will probably roll more than once in each episode.

Dawson's Creek...has for my money one of the best opening scenes of a pilot ever as it sums up beautifully the relationship of Joey and Dawson and then everything that follows falls right into place.

Oct 1, 2018 | Full Review…

Attractive as well as articulate, all these high schoolers qualify for some sort of advanced placement. They're easy to watch, just a little hard to believe.

Feb 3, 2015 | Rating: C+ | Full Review…

To this day, [the series'] shifting combinations of passion and ingenuity remain much appreciated.

Oct 2, 2018 | Full Review…

At least the show acknowledged a world beyond its fictional New England town, as well as what that world would expect of its characters.

Oct 1, 2018 | Full Review…

Three minutes in and it was clear that Joey was going to be everyone's new TV BFF...and rooting for her to get together with Dawson was going to be our new favorite pastime.

Oct 1, 2018 | Full Review…

Its leads are all highly appealing, and despite the utter precociousness of their pop-culture '90s-speak, their show proves an addictive drama with considerable heart.

Dawson's Creek offers a lesson in the dangers of overhype. But Mr. Williamson does seem to have written hit all over it.

Feb 3, 2015 | Full Review…

Dawson's Creek needs less cleverness and more emotional spark. As the 16-year-old in my house said after watching three episodes, "It's like My So-Called Life without the life."

Feb 3, 2015 | Rating: C | Full Review…

The characters are articulate and don't use "like" and "you know" to complete their thoughts. They're introspective and create critical dialogue to question their own relationships, their peers, and the world around them.
