DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Season 1 (2016)

Critic Consensus: Fancy effects, comic-book nostalgia, and an alluring cast help keep it afloat, but DC's Legends of Tomorrow suffers from an overloaded cast of characters that contribute to a distractingly crowded canvas.

Critic Reviews for DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 1

All Critics (36) | Top Critics (14)

There are other moments where you recognize you're watching something that wants to be a cross between Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy. Even if it never gets close to fulfilling that destiny, I'm sticking around to watch it try.

I found Legends, in which time traveler Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) unites various heroes to stop the future destruction of humanity, surprisingly engaging.

The prospect of jumping from era to era to stop Savage holds promise, but there isn't enough interplay between the characters to add any dimension to the early episodes. If only they could go back in time two hours and make a different show.

Of course, it's supposed to be like a comic book, but the clumsy dialogue and stiff acting can be a bit much to get past.

Legends simply feels too loose, too campy. The perils here don't seem as perilous as much as comical - unintentionally so.

Unlike The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl, there arguably are too many characters to service here. Add a lot of attendant gobbledygook and mostly shopworn banter.

If we can just get some sharper writing, a better villain, and someone to fill the hole left by Snart's tragic departure, Legends might just level up.

But once said conversations have been had, after the i's are dotted and t's crossed, the times ahead promise to be spread across the ages and a whole lotta fun.

"DC's Legends of Tomorrow," like its quirky ensemble of characters, shows great promise in living up to its grandiose title.

Like the "legends" themselves, it's got plenty of potential, but ultimately it may leave us wishing its harmful and outdated depictions of consent had been jettisoned in the past, where they belong.

Audience Reviews for DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Season 1

May 07, 2016

I liked this season and thought some of the characters are better than others. Look forward to season two. The show suffered early thanks to the arcs and the characters but this will improve with the season two exposure.

The only CW show that I had no faith in, ended up being the only one I enjoyed while it was running.

Who wrote the script...? The first episode was enough to make me regret wasting 40 minutes of my life.

From the CW comes the Arrow/Flash spin-off Legends of Tomorrow, a thrilling time-travel adventure. In Season 1 a Time Master named Rip Hunter recruits a team of rogues, including the Atom, the White Canary, Captain Cold, Heat Wave, Hawkgirl, and Firestorm, to help him capture a dangerous immortal tyrant named Vandal Savage. The cast is fairly strong, particular Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell; who have great chemistry as a criminal duo (likely due to their days on Prison Break). And the writers do a good job at integrating the show into Arrow and The Flash, and at creating a unique brand of time-travel. However, there are some pacing issues; as the season drags at times and the characters gets stuck wrestling with the same issues over and over again. It's a bit shaky, but Season 1 of Legends of Tomorrow is fun and action-packed.
