Dead Like Me: Season 1 (2003)

SEASON:

Season 1
Dead Like Me

Critics Consensus

Dead Like Me is a required (after)taste, but the series' acidic wit and wry observations about the simple pleasures of life and death overcome the deficit in likable characters.

Critic Reviews for Dead Like Me Season 1

All Critics (16) | Top Critics (5)

Instead of a wormy cadaver, Dead Like Me is robust and original, crossing grimness with comedy.

Sep 27, 2018 | Full Review…

Mixed in all of this snarky soul-snatching are real-life consequences. Dead Like Me balances melancholy with the predominant humor in a believable, smart fashion.

Sep 27, 2018 | Full Review…

It's frisky, freaky and funny in the writing; boasts a fiercely credible performance from Mandy Patinkin; and introduces the splendid Ellen Muth in her first starring role.

Some signs of life.

People expecting a deep look at the afterlife with plenty of philosophy won't find that here, but if you can get lost in a clever, easygoing comedy that's a little bit dark but never too depressing, you shouldn't be disappointed.

The writers are likely going for a comedic and quirky way to do things, and the constant commentary is probably meant to endear us to George, but I found the show to be trying too hard in all of those categories.

Manages to hit every imaginable wrong note along the way.

Sep 27, 2018 | Full Review…

You have to like the ghost leading you into the beyond, and Muth's character makes that almost impossible.

Sep 27, 2018 | Full Review…

What is a soul, and where does it go once the body dies? Does fate exist, and if so, is it inalterable? Dead Like Me deals with these and other coffeehouse musings with a wry touch.

Sep 27, 2018 | Full Review…

There's an old saying that goes "the dead can't hurt you," but in the case of the new Showtime series Dead Like Me they certainly have the power to bore you to death.

Sep 27, 2018 | Full Review…

Punctuated by such dry self-reflections, by George and her fellow Reapers, as well as moments that are oddly poignant or philosophical, concerning the extent of human hubris and the limits of human understanding.

Sep 27, 2018 | Full Review…

George's journey takes precedence over the show's high concept, investing Dead Like Me with characters and absurd situations that make it easier to forgive the gratuitous we're-on-Showtime! profanity.

It's a dark witty comedy. The lore created for it is decently cool. Its not something that you'll fall in love with, but something you wont hate yourself for binge watching.
