Dead to Me doesn't always deliver on the gallows humor that it promises, but the sterling duo of Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini elevates the series above its pulpier aspects -- offering a deeply moving relationship shaped by mutual grief.

Tv Season Info

Jen (Christina Applegate) is a sardonic widow determined to solve her husband?s recent hit-and-run murder. Judy (Linda Cardellini) is an optimistic free spirit who's recently suffered her own tragic loss. When the two women meet at a support group, they become unlikely friends despite their polar-opposite personalities. But as they bond over bottles of wine, Entenmann's cookies and a shared affinity for The Facts of Life, Judy desperately tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it. DEAD TO ME, created by Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls, One Big Happy), is an addictive dark comedy that dives into the painfully unfiltered, weirdly funny waters of grief, loss and forgiveness.

Critic Reviews for Dead to Me Season 1

All Critics (40) | Top Critics (17)

"Dead To Me" is a terrific character study of two women with an extremely complicated relationship, and also like that show, is one of the best and most unpredictable series on television this season.

Only the pacing and occasional glib comment give the sense that humor is present, for "Dead To Me" provides no indication it has a sense of humor at all.

Applegate, moving with ease from comic sourness to genuine dramatic ballast, is the show's revelation. She rightly earned the show's one Emmy nomination, as lead actress in a comedy series.

Dead To Me really nails its depiction of female friendship.

For all the elaborate sets and dramatic motifs, it's Dead to Me's two lead actresses that make the story come to life.

May 17, 2019 | Full Review…

Its mystery could have been a little sharper and its story-line a little more taut, but thanks to the shining talent of its leading ladies, Dead to Me works quite well and is an entertaining new addition to its sub-genre.

As simple as it sounds, "Dead to Me" knows exactly what it is and exactly who its characters aren't.

This humor is a little darker than I usually go for. However, was reeled in from episode one. Really enjoying and looking forward to the next season. Very well done.

Excellent series and cliffhanger. Can't wait to see what the next season brings.
  • Aug 24, 2019
Predictable and corny, Dead to Me doesn't deliver any laughs despite Christina Applegate's and Linda Cardelini's best efforts.

I'm sorry for the cr@p review. The story is actually wonderful so far and I'm blown away by Christina Applegate, and I have one episode to go, but I'm SO annoyed that there's going to be a Season Two. All signs point to this being a Really Good story, masterfully acted and wrapped up with a bow after eight episodes, a gift to us all. It would have been the perfect short story, stretched out over a season to give us character depth and a few absurd but delicious twists and turns. I don't want to wait endlessly for it to move forward or conclude, or worse, discover after three years that the writers had no idea how to end it, and I don't want to follow our leads through a number of other adventures that are implausibly dramatic. Not every successful story has to become an ongoing soap opera, drawing endlessly on the psychology of the characters rather than a good solid plot.

A fantastically acted, thrilling dark comedy about friendship and grief with some killer twists

Amazing!! I was expecting it to be more funny than it actually was.. but it was the perfect combination. It was funny in a sarcastic way and it merged beautifully with the drama going on. And I have to say the ending was quite unexpected.. I'm very happy we will be seeing a season 2

Dead to Me is one of my top 5 favorite new shows of 2019, one of my top 5 Netflix original shows, one of my top 5 favorite comedy shows, and one of my favorite tv shows of all time. Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate give stupendous performances, they are funny and emotional moving and the have great chemistry together, they bounce off of each other perfectly. James Marsden, Max Jenkins, Ed Asner, Valerie Mahaffey, and Sam McCarthy gave great performances as well. The story is fantastic and very unique and original. The screenplay is terrific it is hilarious, sad, and touching. Dead to Me season 1 gets a A+ from me.
