News & Interviews for Deutschland 83: Deutschland 83
The clunky '80s spy technology is riveting. The locations in and around Berlin add visual interest. Nay's cool, understated performance is a plus.
Deutschland 83 is a genuine corker, with flashes of graphic style-an angular black-and-white dress, a carefully arranged drawer of cigarettes, cash, and Nescafé.
It's enough to make us demand more, possibly an entire channel of German drama, if they're all this good.
Stylish, engaging, and engrossing. It's not only a different kind of spy tale, but it's something a little different for Sundance TV, too, whose dramas can sometimes be overwhelmingly dark... In comparison, Deutschland 83 is fast-paced and even peppy.
This drama is so good that we're able to forgive the glaring and all too convenient coincidences.
Deutschland 83 is calibrated for tastes hell-bent on energetic, addictive narratives, and is sure to please contemporary bingers.
It may disguise itself as a product of history, but it sacrifices depth and believability at every turn, tangling itself in knots and then pretending the knots don't exist.
Trust me, watch the first 20 minutes of Deutschland 83 and you'll be hooked for the remainder. It's an adroit spy caper rooted in vivid history.
The premiere episode of Deutschland 83 delivers an excellent mix of coming of age character drama and espionage derring-do. For viewers not allergic to subtitles, it's well worth watching.
Audience Reviews for Deutschland 83: Deutschland 83
Mar 27, 2021The first season is quite the drama: spy action, a good resurrection of the old west/eastern divide, and thrilling to watch. Yes, some of it feeds on too much stereotype, but there's genuine action and believable characters involved. It also tended to not cast too much judgement on either side, which made the series come alive. I recommend.
Dec 24, 2020All 3 seasons are great cold war thrillers.
Jul 04, 2020Engrossing and chilling. The story is grounded in the events of the time and, to those of us coming of age in the '80s, a chilling perspective of what "could've been". Nice to see a balanced storyline without the usual "America-centric" storyline.
Nov 11, 2019Brings back memories from the 80s and how the Cold War played out in front of our eyes
Aug 05, 2019Riveting, addictive, at times implausible but WHO CARES. Loved this show!
Mar 03, 2019Great spy drama with a litte too many coincidences to be completely realistic but one of the best shows ive seen lately. Sadly season 2 cant keep up with it.
Feb 10, 2019Simplistic cringeworthy spy drama with many plot conveniences
Nov 12, 2017Great story based on true events. We'll worth a watch
Sep 29, 2017About 10 years ago or so Good Bye Lenin gave us an insight on how life in East Germany in the 80s might have been. That also goes for The Life of the Others. Both of these are already part of German movie history, and a hundred years from now, both of those will appears as encyclopedias of German movie history, with specific significant to their depiction of east german life. Deutschland 83 is actually better, mostly because its running time is longer, but also because its insight and depth is much deeper. It is also very exciting, and it is not only the life and death of the characters that are in play, but that of all humankind. Never has the world been close to annihilation than this, all because of pure paranoia combined by stifling bureaucracy and human egos. Peak TV at its best; TV can not be better than this.
Nov 24, 2016Fantastic acting with nail biting tension. Loved it!
