    Well plotted out, perfectly acted

The first season is quite the drama: spy action, a good resurrection of the old west/eastern divide, and thrilling to watch. Yes, some of it feeds on too much stereotype, but there's genuine action and believable characters involved. It also tended to not cast too much judgement on either side, which made the series come alive. I recommend.

All 3 seasons are great cold war thrillers.

Engrossing and chilling. The story is grounded in the events of the time and, to those of us coming of age in the '80s, a chilling perspective of what "could've been". Nice to see a balanced storyline without the usual "America-centric" storyline.

Brings back memories from the 80s and how the Cold War played out in front of our eyes
  • Aug 05, 2019
Riveting, addictive, at times implausible but WHO CARES. Loved this show!
  • Mar 03, 2019
Great spy drama with a litte too many coincidences to be completely realistic but one of the best shows ive seen lately. Sadly season 2 cant keep up with it.
  • Feb 10, 2019
Simplistic cringeworthy spy drama with many plot conveniences
  • Nov 12, 2017
Great story based on true events. We'll worth a watch

About 10 years ago or so Good Bye Lenin gave us an insight on how life in East Germany in the 80s might have been. That also goes for The Life of the Others. Both of these are already part of German movie history, and a hundred years from now, both of those will appears as encyclopedias of German movie history, with specific significant to their depiction of east german life. Deutschland 83 is actually better, mostly because its running time is longer, but also because its insight and depth is much deeper. It is also very exciting, and it is not only the life and death of the characters that are in play, but that of all humankind. Never has the world been close to annihilation than this, all because of pure paranoia combined by stifling bureaucracy and human egos. Peak TV at its best; TV can not be better than this.
