Devious Maids: Season 1 (2013)

Critic Consensus: While Devious Maids might be predictable and reminiscent of some other Mark Cherry shows, it flaunts a talented cast and a strong structure.

Tv Season Info

The series follows the lives of four Latina maids working for wealthy families in Beverly Hills. Rosie (Dania Ramíez) works as a nanny for a celebrity couple while longing to bring her son to America from Mexico. Hoping to ultimately burst onto the music scene, Carmen (Roselyn Sanchez) takes a housecleaning job in the home of a Latin pop star. Good-hearted Zoila (Judy Reyes) works for an emotionally unstable woman and never misses a chance to speak her mind. The newbie of the group is the attractive and articulate Marisol (Ana Ortiz) who may be searching for something other than missing window cleaner. During the largest society event of the year, one of their fellow maids is found murdered, creating unity among the women.

Cherry drama rises or falls on the pretty simple test of whether it's fun, and Devious Maids has the right stuff to get to there.

A beautiful mess.

Although it's not as innovative as either one, it gets the blend of drama and self-parodying comedy right. Without getting too dark or too complex, the central murder mystery provides enough incentive to keep us tuning in.

Rooting for the housekeepers to teach these awful people a lesson is one good reason to watch Devious Maids. But so is getting to meet all these interesting, likable Latina women.

Devious Maids is afflicted with a constant and oft-dippy soundtrack that sounds like what you might hear at an Idaho Mexican restaurant run by a gringo named Herb Tuber.

The tone of Devious Maids manages to be not-so-subtly racist, classist, and sexist. (The men are either clods or cads.) Which would be easier to forgive if the plot weren't so predictable.

Take a splash of Downton Abbey, a generous pour of Desperate Housewives and a twist of telenovela and the result is this girlie, playfully spiked summer cocktail.

Devious Maids should fit right in line with the other original programming Lifetime has going on right now,... due to the saccharine nature of the series and the female-geared dialogue throughout the show.

Devious Maids aspires to a heightened level of gaudy escapist entertainment and at times achieves it.

Audience Reviews for Devious Maids: Season 1

Devious maids season 1 was a funny series resembling Desperate Housewives but developed its own interesting flair. Well worth a watch for some tongue in cheek hilarity.
