Temple's choice to play her as stuck-up and righteous makes the circumstances of the show both more believable and more interesting.

If it manages to avoid melodrama, it will be a high point in the history of the American miniseries.

Britton once again proves herself one of the subtlest, realest leading actresses on TV.

The thing I love the most about this show so far is that all of the characters are kind of awful.

Goffard evidently had enough compassion for his subjects to eschew full-on schlockiness. If the creative forces behind Bravo's Dirty John had felt the same obligation, they might have ended up with a decent show.

Viewers might be suckered into wanting to know exactly who this guy is, but the vanilla, passive depiction of his primary victim dulls any empathy for her struggle.

Dirty John may not be quite as gripping as the LA Times podcast, but it's another step in the validation of a medium that is witnessing a golden age.

Where Dirty John is perhaps most revealing is in its understanding of how people's pasts, their traumas, their beliefs and their desires cause them to behave in the strangest ways.

Not bad for a pulpy true-crime yarn.

For a series rooted in fact, Dirty John is strangely flat and artificial. It resembles a cheesy Hallmark Movie of the Week, dragged out to eight hours.

It has the feeling of a photocopy of a photocopy, or a shot-for-shot remake. Fascinating, but hamstrung by our changing relationship with truth and fiction.

Eric Bana is terrific as Dirty John, so sexy and appealing yet creepy too. He combines those qualities perfectly: you really can believe that when he focuses attention on you, you can hardly resist.

What's also scary is the paradox that Bravo's extended narrative presents.

For all the sensational elements of this story, it's a realistic and empathetic look at abuse, manipulation, and courage.

True crime podcast turned drama is creepy to the max.

Juno Temple deserves her own special award, specifically for playing Veronica Newell, Debra's older daughter. Neither an Emmy nor Golden Globe will be enough.

The early takeaways from Dirty John: Listen to your daughter, even if she is a privileged, selfish, entitled brat, and never go to a second location with a man who wears cargo pants.

If only Andy Cohen would pop up periodically to ask the Newells what they're thinking, "Dirty John" would be the most Bravo thing ever.
November 26, 2018
Taking upper middle-class life for granted, it never digs into the story beneath the story, be it Debra's culturally ingrained ideas of romantic love or her sense of entitlement.
