Although Betty Broderick's sensational Story is at times scattershot, Amanda Peet's incredible embodiment of a woman scorned is a sight to behold.

Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story Videos

Tv Season Info

The second installment of this anthology series, is based on another epic true tale of love gone wrong ? a story that spans the 1960s to the '80s, through the breakdown of a marriage that Oprah deemed one of "America's messiest divorces" even before it ended in double homicide. Betty Broderick is the perfect blonde wife and mother. Married to Dan, Betty charms everyone she meets and after years of sacrifice while supporting Dan through both medical and law school, Betty is finally enjoying the fruits of their labors. Until Dan hires Linda, a bright, young woman without baggage with whom he can happily forget the struggles of his past. Betty's attempts to fight back and enraged refusals to accept reality only serve to isolate and destabilize her until she loses her very identity. And Dan's cold confidence blinds him to the bear he has created and won't stop poking...until it's too late.

Critic Reviews for Dirty John The Betty Broderick Story

All Critics (16) | Top Critics (7)

While Betty's performance gets much less convincing, Peet's just keeps getting better and better. There is not a moment wasted, not a single line or non-verbal reaction not fully explored for all its potential.

Jun 8, 2020 | Full Review…

Slater's recognizable star power aside, the focus, really, is exclusively on Betty, and if there's any real reason to recommend The Betty Broderick Story, it's to appreciate the sheer range and volume of characterizations Peet gets to offer.

Jun 2, 2020 | Full Review…

By the time it's over, Betty Broderick is both "a woman scorned" and one better understood, without sacrificing any of the trashy chewiness that has drawn viewers to such material since long before she ever pulled the trigger.

The Betty Broderick Story explains what drove Betty to bare her teeth. It may also make you reflect on what it would take for you to do the same thing.

Jun 2, 2020 | Full Review…

Did Dan Broderick deserve to die? No, but Slater's performance, and the way he pulls the rug out from under Betty, takes me back to my theater experience watching Heathers.

Jun 11, 2020 | Full Review…

Amanda Peet's performance is more than enough to put Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story on a season pass.

Jun 10, 2020 | Full Review…

Christian Slater and Peet both take material that could have easily become wild melodrama and give it a sharp, dramatic depth.

Jun 5, 2020 | Full Review…

Amanda Peet delivers a riveting performance as she captures the downward spiral of a wife and mother who's had the rug very publicly ripped out from under her feet.

Jun 3, 2020 | Rating: B- | Full Review…

The success of this USA series hinges on Peet's fantastic portrayal.

Jun 2, 2020 | Rating: 8.9/10 | Full Review…

Peet is very good playing opposite a cold Christian Slater, but she has to modulate her madness so it can last over 10 episodes.

Jun 2, 2020 | Full Review…

Convincing in both her misery and her capacity for dangerous payback, Peet scorches the screen as a loose cannon of festering paranoia and self-pity.

Jun 1, 2020 | Full Review…

[Amanda Peet] is very, very good, somehow playing all sides of the tonal kaleidoscope here at once, differing depending from which angle you look at it.

Audience Reviews for Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story

Unfortunately I love A Woman Scorned - Betty Broderick with Meredith Baxter and so I already went in with a critical eye. It is so disjointed that I know the story and still don't know what's going on. The way this series was put together is the worst part of it all but the character portrayals are a close second. I'm not feeling Amanda Peet as this character at all. That flipped hairdo, that is nothing like the real Betty, is driving me crazy. I was hoping that it would be slightly entertaining at the very least but it is just awful. Stick with Meredith Baxter on this one, she's excellent as Betty.

Amanda Peete and Christian Slater are great in this. We know what is going to happen yet it's very enjoyable to watch. Much better than season 1's story.

So good and so painful to watch because that is life for a divorced woman in America. I went through the same things that the court did to this poor woman. All divorced women in America have the same story. Justice for women in the court Sumter.

Wow... so far so good! Really enjoying this new spin on things and Slater's portrayal of Dan Broderick captures so much more of the story. He didn't deserve to die, but he really did spin her up like a top and push her over the edge.
