Shashi D @Shashi Dec 31 This is lazy, irresponsible writing that confuses shock with depth and hides behind a hollow "anyone can do evil" slogan to excuse missing causality. Extreme violence doesn’t erupt from a cheerful, consequence-free vacuum, and pretending it does is like claiming a blind man randomly drove a bus — possible only if you skip every rule that makes stories make sense. By erasing all red flags and psychological buildup, the writers don’t create realism, they destroy it, leaving paranoia where insight should be. Critics defending this aren’t engaging with craft, they’re laundering bad writing through moral abstraction. Well firstly, the cast is very strong. Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Art Malik, Sacha Baron Cohen and Lesley Manville. But what a waste. The script, its dialogue and the execution of it was very poor. There isn’t a single likeable character in the entire series. Not one. As for the plot? Are we honestly expected to believe what we were witnessing? None of it realistically hangs together. It’s all nonsense. Totally unrealistic. I wonder if any of the actors actually watched it afterwards? I found it all uncomfortably embarrassing. This was a superb drama whose "pulpiness" or "melodrama" was earned in every case. No wasted space; every glance mattered. One theme was the vital one about how perspective changes reality. And the other was about having no voice because no one is listening. In the last episode, Catherine cries, "It's time for my voice to be heard!" But, most transcendently important were the performances, uniformally good. Of course, Cate Blanchett was extraordrinary (dare I say, as usual?) But, most incredible, so beyond compare it was scary, was the Pirate King himself become the most pathetic, bitter old man imaginable. Kevin Kline alone is reason enough for five stars and an excellent reason to study this fine drama. He surpassed himself and I was left in awe.
