What to Know

Critics Consensus

DMZ takes an explosive premise and lets it fizzle, although a commanding Benjamin Bratt tries his best to ignite some sparks in this uneven dystopian drama.

Yes I know it sounds preposterous, but Patino and DuVernay manage to make sense of it all, even if the storylines start to get pinched and somewhat squashed... Go to Full Review

The first episode, directed by Ava DuVernay, has some overwrought sequences, but Ernest R. Dickerson brings some welcome grit to the ensuing episodes. Go to Full Review

The actors stretch mightily in their performances to sell the many plot holes that DMZ requires us to ignore. Go to Full Review

It's no real wonder that DMZ has been all but entirely ignored by just about everyone, even Warners themselves, who, as near as I can tell, did absolutely no promotion for the show whatsoever Go to Full Review

There's so much to take away from this intense series in such a short time that it can become too much -- overwhelming for some and inappropriate for younger kids. Go to Full Review

It takes a bit to take off, but once it does it reels you in. A well-crafted post-apocalyptic story about perseverance and family. Rosario Dawson gives a strong performance. Go to Full Review

Renaldo W @RT57905958 Jun 2 This reminds me of a modern version of the Montague' and the Capulets! Im just saying! I loved it! Deserved more episodes. See more Kristyn M @Kenneth1984 Aug 16 Interesting premise stupidly done. See more Gerard S @Bobby256 03/20/2023 It starts off very boring, but as the show progresses, the show get's better. The only problem is because this is a 4 episode limited series, they rush through the show way to much. See more K F @RT29864102 11/29/2022 Great premise, great casting, started off strong; went down hill fast and steep. This is yet ANOTHER of the same we see in EVEY sci-fi, post-apocalyptic show or movie now—main character obsessively searching for a loved one; they will burn the world down to fond their loved one and we are supposed to … identify with them? Like them? This plot device is tired, nonsensical and boring. We don't care about their kid or wife or whatever, we don't know them. Stick to the big picture issues! We DON'T care! Rosario Dawson's character quickly becomes tedious and ridiculous. The problem is that in order to buy into the story and play along, we need to root for Dawson's character but this is really hard and she just seems like another psychopath amongst many and we are meant to like her but hate them. Her character takes over and dominates the community but there is no logical in-story reason why or how; which means she ends up just being an unbearable Mary Sue we are meant to fall for because … I guess because she is written as the main character…? Halfway through something weird happens with writing too. Most of it feels like times wasting and it's mainly Dawson's character self-righteously preaching in every other scene. This would have been a much better show as an ensemble with her having way less lines and scenes and id it didn't try and take itself so incredibly and embarrassingly seriously. See more 05/23/2022 I really enjoyed the world of this show. It feels like a more urban and vibrant version of the Wild West, and I felt fully immersed in the politics and the culture until the end. Visually, the well-placed lighting and sets really help bring the world into reality. The acting was solid, but of course not every actor and actress will knock your socks off. I want to speak about how memorable some of my favorite characters are like Parco and Meilin, but relationships between the characters are so well established from the beginning that the audience doesn't really get a chance to know too many characters all that well. There were also a couple of (in my opinion) odd decisions made in some scenes, but they are few and far between. The action was fairly well done, other than the fact that it could have been captured better. Overall, I enjoyed watching the series and being immersed in the world that was built, despite the fact that more could have been done. I think a couple extra episodes would have done it some good. See more 04/12/2022 The DMZ is dark, gritty and Shakespearean. Stand out performances by Benjamin Bratt, Rosario Dawson, Freddy Miyares, Sydney Park, and Hoon Lee bring this tale of dystopian disconnection, forbidden love, and a mother who fights like a tiger for her son. The character of Alma Ortega is someone that every woman should aspire to be in their everyday lives - courageous, relentless, and unapologetic. A story that's rife with male violence and hunger for power that is rectified through a woman's common sense and compassion. See more Read all reviews
