Is there a dyspeptic doctor in the house? Successful surgeon Dr. Martin Ellingham abruptly leaves his London practice to become general practitioner in the sleepy fishing village of Portwenn, where he spent the holidays during his youth. But his luxury car and lavish wardrobe immediately rub the locals the wrong way, and once they get a load of his abrasive attitude and lack of bedside manner, he quickly alienates most of the townsfolk.

As escapism goes -- it's almost bearable, the sweetness of the essential fantasy about village life cut by the lead character's tart refusal to obey the social niceties. Go to Full Review
John Doyle Globe and Mail 02/05/2019
The show and the village both suffer from a major dose of cutes, something that our hero cannot escape or cure. Go to Full Review

4/5
Martin remains a glowering, aloof presence with no bedside manner or tact. That said, the rest of the cast is fine, too; Catz is charming and a perfect match for Clunes, while McNeice, Cadell, and Absolom are very good also. Go to Full Review

Louise C May 16 So unfortunate that Stephanie Cole decided to abandon this show. She was a delight as Martin's Aunty Joan. Her sister does not have the same charisma. It appears that the script writers are having trouble thinking up fresh ideas. Viewed on Amazon Prime Video in New Zealand. Seasons 1 to 7 only, are availble here. See more Andrew S 01/24/2023 Sub-par season. They made Doc Martin incredibly unlikable. Everything felt forced and awkward, like they were running out of steam. The next season is a big step up for the show across the board. See more 04/04/2021 I love this show. I can never get enough of it. See more 03/23/2020 I love it!!!
