Critic Reviews for Doctor Who The Husbands of River Song (2015 Christmas Special)

This year, instead of giving us a Christmas-themed story, the writers instead decided to give us all a Christmas present: the missing final chapter in the love story of the Doctor and River.
The entire affair felt a delightfully fun romp with some lovely emotional resonance in the third act. It's Christmas. It's Doctor Who. What more do you need?
If "The Husbands of River Song" is less Christmasy than most of the previous specials, it is a splendid gift to fans nonetheless.
"The Husbands Of River Song" ends up being fun, even when it's flawed, because even its clunkiest music cues can't overwhelm Peter Capaldi's performance.
This story is pure sentimentality, and I mean that as a compliment. It's about who we love and how we love them and why we need people and when.
Really, though, the strength in this episode was in the interplay between Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston.
Additionally, in one fell swoop, that final scene gave the viewers something we honestly never thought we'd see or even thought we should ask for: a true marriage between the Doctor and River.
'The Husbands Of River Song' acts as a fitting coda to the Doctor and River's relationship while still giving hope that this isn't the last we'll see of her.
The Husbands of River Song, contrary to its predecessors, actually carries all the hallmarks of being a substantial installment, rather than a bit of festive fluff.
"The Husbands of River Song" dumbed River down because the story needed her to be ignorant, something that doesn't line up with the woman we know.
"The Husbands of River Song" feels more akin to a Davies-era Christmas installment-it bounces along carelessly like a hyper child on a sugar high only to suddenly swerve into an emotional conclusion.
As far as goodbyes go, it managed to be one of the sweetest in modern Who history.
