Wonderfully witty, just festive enough and perfectly pitched between spills, thrills and scares, this was the time-travelling franchise's best and most family-friendly Christmas special for five years.

It was comforting and heartfelt, especially with the nods to the Doctor mourning his wife. It felt like the grounding transition we needed for the new adventures that will come in Season 10.

It does keep the tone as light as we would want for post-dinner viewing -- and is packed with enough witty one-liners and slightly bumbling action sequences to keep non-fans happy.

[O]utside of that strange overwrought scheme, this episode was perfect for the holidays and a happy return after a solid year lacking new Doctor Who stories.

The Return of Doctor Mysterio is a delicious mash-up of Doctor Who, Christopher Reeve's Superman and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, condensed into an hour that never drags.

The Return of Doctor Mysterio was surprisingly fun and ... we don't know any other word to describe it but "palatable," which sounds like a backhanded compliment but isn't meant as one.

Here we are with The Return of Doctor Mysterio, and while I'm not ready to add it to the regular set in my house, it's decidedly not bad.

The poetic way it rolls off his tongue is reason enough for it to become an established part of Doctor Who canon.

The referencing that we've come to expect falls strangely flat, a mishmash of tropes, symbols, and callbacks that ultimately don't lead anywhere.

All in all, this episode is just fine, plenty serviceable and entertaining.

Capaldi is great as usual! A real Doctor
  • Dec 22, 2018
Not a great Christmas special but at least it is better than no Christmas Special *Cough Cough Chris Chibnall Cough Cough*
  • Dec 15, 2018
I can see where people may find this silly and not Doctor who, but I liked the superhero concept. And the ending with the Doctor’s grief was superb acting by Capaldi.
  • Nov 27, 2018
Superman was my favorite superhero. So to have the Doctor team up with a Superman type character was great to see. Loved it.
  • Sep 25, 2018
Interesting concept but some scenes is just cringey, its boring and it focus more on the hero than the MAIN CHATACTER (hint: The Doctor)

A great episode, but not that christmassy
  • Jul 25, 2017
The Doctor's return to NYC is outstandingly written as a Superman-style superhero origin story mixed in with lots of love... and the heartbreaking subplot of the Doctor mourning the recent (for her, long ago for him) loss of his own love "a long time ago, in a library."
  • Jun 12, 2017
Felt like a cross of Doctor who and Superman and because it is a doctor who episode it can pull it off.
  • Apr 17, 2017
Peter Capaldi and Matt Lucas were great, especially towards the end of the episode, but the script and direction never allowed for any real mystery, emotion, or excitement. The Return of Doctor Mysterio wasn't bad, but it should have been much better.
