Critic Reviews for Doctor Who Resolution (2019 New Year's Special)
All Critics (20) | Top Critics (6) | Fresh (19) | Rotten (1)
Whittaker's Doctor rises from her habitual state of goofy wonder to world-protector battle mode, that attitude of nervous confidence the Daleks always bring out in her.
Whatever threats the future may bring, the Doctor and her friends will be there to fight back - and if their future adventures are as much fun as "Resolution," I can't wait.
[It] offers all the cinematic bombast that was missing from "The Battle Of Ranskoor Av Kolos," although it takes a bifurcated approach to delivering a story that's both exciting and emotional.
This special is worthy. [Full Review in Spanish]
Resolution plays around with Dalek tropes to make a fresh and exciting story, it's only slightly let down by a less than stellar ending.
the aptly-titled "Resolution" represents the kind of well-paced, high stakes television we've been looking for in showrunner Chris Chibnall's ambitious yet shaky first season.
Resolution suffers from the same problems as Chibnall's other recent episodes - there's the structure of a good story, but many niggling problems mean it could be much better.
What we got was a story that felt like that familiar Who again.
With that action-packed, emotionally driven finale, "Resolution" successfully kicks off the New Year while leaving us wanting more of this Doctor Who - confident, fun, and finally on solid footing after a shaky 11th season.
Doctor Who can tell so many kinds of stories, from the straight-up monster-laden action to heady tales of morality, but it is arguably at its best, as it was here, when it naturally manages to mix the both of them.
Showrunner Chris Chibnall provides perhaps his best script of the season for this episode, injecting a certain showmanship and scale into the proceedings.
Otherwise, like more or less all of the other present- and future-set episodes this season, I found the New Year's Day special solid, if unspectacular.

Apr 08, 2019After a series of mostly "meh" we finally get a new year special that offers a good story, respects the 55 year legacy of the show (by bringing in an iconic enemy), while equally EXPANDING on the legacy (the enemy is something new, while still remaining perfectly traditional). The creation of an earth made alien weapon beautifully echoed the Doctor's "earth made" sonic from the pilot of this Doctor's season. The tension is good, the pacing is good, the threat seemed real. Sadly the ending lets it down. Had the "final hostage" been killed, we could had a payoff akin to "Starship Titanic" to continue the respect of better quality stuff. This season continues to be the season of "great concepts with pay offs tha don't satisfy". That said, this special gave hope that MAYBE season 12 (Jodi's second season), which will air after a YEAR hiatus (maybe to hire better writers and directors to give better scripts and direction), they may finally give Jodi a chance for to show off that the Doctor can be female, and still be the character we have loved for 55 years.

Apr 07, 2019Doctor Who Resolution was the New Years special for the 11th series of The Doctor. This was my favourite episode on the series because they finally brought back The Daleks. As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring from across the centuries of Earth's history. As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth? The episode had a very engaging plot but the sub-plot between Ryan and his dad went on for a long time and got very boring. But overall it is A brilliant Doctor Who episode, and a brilliant close to the great series

Mar 30, 2019Christmas special was killed for this?
-
Mar 18, 2019This was actually quite an enjoyable special, while it still has its flaws, I don't think it deserves the hate it's been getting. Quite frankly, it's a much better special than some of the previous Christmas specials we got

Mar 16, 2019Really, I think I get the critics. If this would have been an episode of, lets say, something mediocre like a new simpsons episode or an episode of some boring american sci-fi show, I think I would have liked it. But this is a terrible Doctor Who episode or at least confirmation that the show we all onced loved and praised is now only a cold, dead corpse and Chipnall having the blood on its hands. You think I am exaggerating? Well, I was so stunned after I saw episodes like silence in the library or Midnight, even loving Vincent. I couldn't believe that we, as humans, could make something so great, funny, touching and creative. Nowadays I love other things like Black Mirror or Good Omens because they took my favourite show and destroyed it. Thanks Chipnall
