Dollface: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Dollface

Critics Consensus

Dollface has all of the right parts: a talented cast, a promising premise, and plenty of surreal intrigue -- if only its shallow vision of feminism didn't undermine them.

Critic Reviews for Dollface Season 1

All Critics (24) | Top Critics (10)

This is a great cast of women, trapped in a series made by a bunch of obviously talented people who will almost certainly go on to make smart, funny, daring, bold things. This isn't one of them.

Nov 13, 2019 | Full Review…

Dollface could have been a fun, forgettable diversion, the kind of show meant to be watched as you fold laundry. But its approach to feminism, which it name-checks, strikes a sour note.

Dollface reminds us yet again why [Kat] Dennings' droll comedic persona serves as the steady core of a project like this.

Nov 14, 2019 | Full Review…

The simplicity of "Dollface" doesn't make the show any less fun, although this slenderly conceived comedy vehicle for "2 Broke Girls" star Kat Dennings could easily have landed on a conventional broadcast network.

"Dollface" is not B.F.F. material, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good time. The vibe is right, the tiny details well observed, and Mitchell's performance is a treat and a half.

Nov 15, 2019 | Full Review…

It's the pastel-colored clichés, woefully outdated attempts at slang and a singular vision of what womanhood is in 2019 that makes the show cringe-worthy in all the wrong ways.

The on-the-nose nature of the #girlpower message may have been less annoying if its critique of gender politics weren't so shallow.

Jan 23, 2020 | Full Review…

Ultimately, the series really works because of the strong performances. Anyone who has watched Kat Dennings knows she deserves a TV hit. She's a great everywoman trying to navigate the tricky landscape of female friendships in your twenties.

Nov 13, 2019 | Rating: 7.9/10 | Full Review…

Individually, these characters work fine, but together, they're a headache, and that's a problem when the whole point of the show is proving that girl squads - their words, not mine - can have each other's backs no matter what.

Nov 14, 2019 | Rating: 40/100 | Full Review…

Dollface is packed with gripping and funny imagery that wonderfully reflects distinctly feminine insecurities.

Nov 15, 2019 | Full Review…

Much like the series, Jules never reaches her potential, instead forming into a lead on a middle-of-the-road sitcom with all the right setup leading to a nonexistent punch line. Dollface lacks bite, conviction, and ultimately a reason to keep watching.

Dec 26, 2019 | Full Review…

Despite the familiar territory, Dollface works largely because Kat Dennings and the core cast are such a joy to watch.

While there's plenty of great, well known actors, I remember Kat Dennings from 2 Broke Girls, I found the first season to be a sensationalized version of Sex And The City gone cutsy. Everything just seemed to work out too perfectly for them, instant jobs, instant apartments, instant friends., and everyone always getting along. I woulda settled for the main character Jules getting splashed by a bus: hence Sex and the City opener reference.

What the hell is this show? "You don't want to end up like a guys girl" actual quote from episode one. What an ugly depiction and poor writing.

Love, love, love this show. It's very clever and heartwarming at the end

The critics don't get it... shocker. It's all about reclaiming stereotypes. Don't let the negative reviews stop you from watching a genuinely great show

I'm surprised about the low score on here. Dollface is hilariously written and acted. I loved the Cat Lady and can't wait for season 2
