Tv Season Info

Season 2 of the costume drama opens during World War I with Matthew (Dan Stevens) and Thomas (Rob James-Collier) stuck in the trenches in France; and Sir Robert (Hugh Bonneville) and William (Thomas Howe) longing to join the action, though only William eventually does?but not before asking Daisy (Sophie McShera) to marry him. The war theme continues through the season, as Isobel (Penelope Wilton) convinces the family to turn the estate into a convalescent center for wounded soldiers . T he arrangement, however, causes Isobel's already fractious relationship with Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) and the Dowager (Maggie Smith) to become even more so . Sybil ( Jessica Brown Findlay), meanwhile, bucks aristocratic tradition and trains to become a nurse; and Edith ( Laura Carmichael) reads to the soldiers, in the process meeting someone whose presence could disrupt Robert's succession plans for the estate. Mary (Michelle Dockery), meanwhile, has a new suitor in newspaper mogul Richard Carlisle ( Iain Glen); and Matthew, too, has a new love interest: the lovely Lavinia (Zoe Boyle). O n the downstairs front, the potential romance between Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle) and Anna ( Joanne Froggatt) hits a potential snag, though Bates works to unravel it.

The new series vibrates excitingly on many frequencies, but it specially resonates as a rare hybrid of domestic drama and shelter porn.

The two Downton seasons so far provide an engrossing escape to an age on the verge of technological and social change.

Much grimmer, grayer and (gasp) dowdier. Still mostly wonderful.

Downton Abbey was the best TV show of 2011 and give or take Mad Men it could also be the best show of 2012.

The show gets things right more often than it gets them wrong, especially as various story lines knit themselves together over the course of the season.

The good news is that the indomitable Maggie Smith is back as the dowager countess, who not only gets all the best lines, but also knows what to do with them.

Downton Abbey is still a fine, handsome entertainment, and if you inherently like this sort of thing more than I ever will, I imagine you'll be very happy to return there for the new season.
