Critic Reviews for Dragon Ball Z Kai Season 1

Slow is not an adjective I would use to describe Dragon Ball Z Kai. It drags you in, pins you down, and makes you drink the kool aid.

Feb 22, 2019 | Full Review…

Thrilled to have this stripped-down, streamlined version of one of the greatest anime series ever made.

Voice wise, "Kai" continues to impress on both fronts... The English dub is, unlike the dub of Z, very accurate and consistent.

Feb 22, 2019 | Rating: 9/10 | Full Review…

Benefits from the cutting of a lot of filler side stories that really did little to add to the series as a whole, only making this version that little bit more enjoyable.

Although the modern version streamlines the extremely complicated plot of Dragon Ball Z, it will still take viewers a handful of episodes to fully grasp the story.

Oct 22, 2018 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Kai exists as a re-do, a start-over, using the original cells and episode structures to tell the saga "as it was meant to be told." The thing is, Kai honestly feels more like the result of an anime chop-shop than a coherent series.

Oct 22, 2018 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Overloaded with animated macho and not the least bit ashamed to say so. DBZ does what it does about as well as any show like this ever has, though, and trimming out all of the fat the way Kai does just makes it that much better.

Oct 22, 2018 | Rating: 8/10 | Full Review…

The visuals have been reformatted for wider screens, and the dialogue re-recorded in a better translation. The accelerated pace energizes Kai, making it funnier and more exciting than the original.
