Even though I took a chance on Kakegurui, Netflix now owns those six hours of my life. The house always wins. Go to Full Review

Ash P @AshParth May 31 I guess the sad truth comes out before I get started with this review. First time I've watched this, I found it to be one of the best. Yet as I'm older and grown a little wiser, I found myself mixed with this one. Not saying that it's godawful or anything. It just more-or-less exists. So first of all, what's the story? Not really much of a story. It just started with the main character, Ryota Susui, who is going through his life as a house pet after losing a gambling match against Mary. All of a sudden, a new transfer student has arrived named Yumeko Jabami. She is a compulsive gambler and loves to stake even her life away, all for the thrill of it. But, uh oh, the students council president, Kirari Momobami, does not like Yumeko's presence as she's the "Serpent of Eden" who'd slithered away and now worried that Yumeko is coming after her and the rest of the council, one member at a time. Well, not every member. Only a few of them. We do see some of their backstory, but not from every member. It's kinda funny that this school doesn't have teachers, and from what other students would say that since Kirari had arrived, it all changed. Pretty much all there is to it as the school rules are all survival of the fittest, and it's all about gambling. I will be fair, the gambling aspect is a gimmick of the anime, and they do get creative. Some are a little odd for me, but it's how the anime works. Whatever floats the school's boat. For the characters, I do hate to say it, but not so much. Yumeko is the only greater aspect of the series as she is what others theorize is that she is the "Serpent of Eden" that Kirari had called her. To be fair, back then, I always found her as a temptress since all she wanted to do was gamble, and that's fine. For the student council, not so much or any shred of interest since they're all pretty awful people. Some of them would cheat. Some of them are just over-the-top nutcases. I know that gamer girl is everyone's favorite, yet I have to disagree since all she did was sit around, observe, play on her PSP, and eat candy. I don't have any interest in any of the student council members at all. I know Susui has had a few uses, like being of good use for Yumeko twice or thrice and being moral support. However, he's just kind of a bland character and is mostly on the side. I mean, you can get away with having a male character being a cheerleader and more power to him. He worries about Yumeko when she can handle any gamble without any worry except when he was needed like that psychic card guessing game with Russian Roulette mixed in. I know it sounds like I'm being a little too mean, but I'll give the animation designs credit that they had given each character a design to know who they are. Not really too much on the hands that are shown since it is pretty CG. It might've been the first time MAPPA had used some of it. Feel free to correct me on that. They just looked a bit miffed. But my lore, the anime loves having that close-up to the face fetish that brings me back to Son of the Mask that loves using it's wide-angle lens and Snow White where you see too much close-ups with the CG dwarfs. When they make specific faces, I could only cringe a bit since that's pretty much outdated, if you ask me. I don't mind close-ups when it comes to eyes or when it's showing their full head, but way too close with how they added stretch marks on their faces. Or seeing their teeth or noses like I would see either their tonsils or nose hair - which could be up to your imagination if you ever see any of those. I love the eyes glowing, though. When it comes to Yumeko and Kirari. Even got some cool shots, especially at the final episode when Susui had to pick the final card. The music was good, too, for the theme of such. The anime does rely so much on how much humiliation is shown, as well as the fair amount of sex innuendos here and there. Even when some boys wanted to commit sexual assault to any girl who is labeled as a house pet. Could feel the same for that eye patch girl who has a massive thirst for Yumeko. More power to her, I guess. There is some fanservice in this, yet not too heavy on such, as far as I was re-watching this. Overall, this isn't terrible nor as amazing as I'd thought of several years ago when it'd debuted on Netflix. Again, I'm mixed on this. It has its moments, yet it is not the best anime on Netflix as some folks would claim. This is certainly an anime where you'd shut your brain off and have fun with it. I'm giving Kakegurui five and a half Yumeko posing as a naughty kitty cat out of ten. 5.5/10. See more 06/26/2021 Kakegurui is a near-flawless anime with engaging gambling matches, even for people like me who never play cards or gamble. This show contains interesting characters with unique personalities that immediately draw you in the show, there's great music, intriguing dialogue, and beautiful animation. See more 05/19/2021 Such a fun and exciting show! See more 03/22/2021 es hermoso como hacen un anime tan entretenido sin siquiera ser fan de anime alv, y al ser tan crudo y no tan comun See more 02/12/2021 Kakegurui is my favorite anime series. It's really well animated and the English dub on Netflix is superb. The whole premise is kinda ridiculous, but that's part of its appeal. The characters are great and it's always exciting to see what game is next. See more 01/26/2020 It's not for everyone, but the suspense is really thrilling! I think the first season is the best, because Yumeko Jabami just.. constantly throws over your belief of where you would think she would draw a line. All the gamble scenes are so intense and cleverly written so it's rarely clear what is going to happen next even if you know what the characters are planning on doing. You can tell that it's a bit more targeted to male audience but it doesn't really bother me. Every episode in Season 1 except Number 6 was cool for me. See more Read all reviews
