What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though not all of its innovations pay off, The Investigation's deliberate focus on the aftermath of a heinous crime successfully eschews sensationalism while offering sobering insights into the harsh realities of seeking justice.

Just when you think you've had quite enough of true-crime murder stories and Scandi noir, along comes The Investigation to show that there's life left in both. Go to Full Review

A meticulous step-by-step procedural that would put the likes of CSI and Law & Order to shame with its slow accumulation of detail, its eschewal of lucky breaks, its focus on dogged repetition as the backbone of police work. Go to Full Review

In The Investigation, pursuing justice is a communal act of faith that ultimately becomes catharsis: a reminder of why justice is necessary, why it's worth committing to - and why it's worth every labored, excruciating second of our time. Go to Full Review

Sometimes it's as though The Investigation doesn't believe its own premise, leaving that central conceit feeling less like an innovation and more like a marketing gimmick. Go to Full Review

The drama is subtle and patient, if sometimes dry, but there is something extremely powerful about not framing a woman's murder as pure entertainment. Go to Full Review

In this first episode I already admire the taciturn intensity of all involved in bringing justice to the dead. Can't wait for the next five Monday nights to see it through. Join me? Go to Full Review

Alexa K @aksss512 02/17/2025 Wow. This was such a well done series. The Investigation tells an important story with such care and precision, focusing on those who fought for justice for Kim Wall, her family, and loved ones. It’s a slow burn, but each moment showcases the tremendous obstacles the investigators, prosecution, navy & divers, oceanographers, and many more faced. The series never gives the psychopath a single appearance—this is not his story, but one of justice, resilience, and those who refused to let him define Kim’s legacy. More than a crime drama, it honors Kim as a journalist, telling the kind of story she might have pursued herself. See more Niels M 07/10/2024 This is indeed very slow. And it is supposed to be. As it is build on a true case, and it wants to respect the victim and not mention the perpetrator, it can't dramatize him and his psychopathic behavior. It instead takes the view of the lead detective, and in a quite realistic way show how a difficult investigation is conducted and how high the threshold for "beyond reasonable doubt" is in a healthy legal state... See more Jim W @TVViews 02/26/2023 Everything is slow. The pace is brutal. The dialog is missing . The facial expressions are frustrating. They had to work very hard to make this so uncomfortably bad. See more Robin H 03/21/2022 Interesting true case, but so SLOW. A three episode story padded out to six. See more Patrick S @patseitz 03/05/2022 Criminal investigation show that's all procedural. Doesn't recreate the crime or show interviews with the suspect. Fresh take. See more 11/13/2021 Stretched out so much that it looks like a parody of True Detective. This strange love for the back of the head of the protagonist is only annoying and not the effect of presence (as I think). 3 out of 6 episodes, we see the back of the head against any background, but most often in the car. Can anyone cut this series up and fit into 3 episodes?) See more Read all reviews
