auroras and sad prose @RT77319713 01/16/2023 It started off interesting but ended up disappointing me. The villains seemed almost invincible, as they were never captured (Dang Gise), and if they were captured, never killed, and if they were killed, still seemed to come back from the dead (Yeom Byung-So). The good people, like Wang Yu, his group, Byul, Yeon Bisoo, Court Lady No, etc. After the first half of the drama, there was no humour, no light hearted conversation, not a single moment of peace. Only tragedy, scheming, pain and revenge without a moment to catch one's breath. It got rather suffocating, tbh. Seung Yung was a wonderful character and I love how she carried herself. Her intelligence and clever plotting would keep me hooked. However, I don't like her pairing with the Emperor. The emperor went from a spoiled child, to a jealous whining young man, to a cruel and incompetent ruler- and although I tried really hard, there was nothing even slightly likeable about him. Not to mention how he forces himself on Seung Yang multiple times in the drama. STOP ROMANTICIZING ABUSE!!! Wang Yu was always my favourite. It seemed like what Seung Yung and Wang Yu had shared was real, pure, and sweet. He earned her respect in a way the Emperor never could. She may have loved the Emperor, but she truly respected Wang Yu. In many ways, Wang Yu was the opposite of the Emperor. He was selfless, and intelligent, noble and brave. He dedicated his life to helping Seung Yung without demanding anything for himself- just quietly protected her from afar. He is the one who truly deserved a happy ending. The life of Byul was particularly tragic and in all honesty, his death seemed unnecessary. What was also unnecessary was Eunuch Bang hiding from Wang Yu and Seung Yung that their child is alive. He actually put them all in great jeopardy by keeping them in the dark, as well as allowing the child to grow up unloved and alone, then crying about Byul's tragic fate. See more 05/28/2022 The Empress Ki drama has it all, the 51 episodes fly by in no time. Ji Chang-Wook who plays Emperor Ta Hwan is so good and his role is the most versatile, and he plays so well that you get goosebumps. I have watched this drama twice, but I think I need to watch it again soon. See more sarah a @Padlock 05/19/2021 The best Korean period drama I've seen so far. There are around 70 episodes at about an hour each. It's entertaining from the beginning and the plot gradually develops. There is so much to this season. Lots of backstabbing and drama. The main character grows in strength throughout the series. I've seen quite a few period K dramas and none compares to this one See more 04/09/2021 Empress Ki is very loosely based on the true story of a 14th century Korean slave girl who rose to become the Empress of China - quite an incredible career path! Actress Ha Ji Won does an amazing job playing one of the strongest female characters in cinema, rising step by step from the absolute bottom of society to unchallenged power while destroying everyone who opposes her. It's very difficult to play a super strong female personality who doesn't become just hard in the process, but Lady Ki remains a sympathetic character throughout as she uses her intelligence, bravery, and marshal arts skills to outwit and outfight her opponents while protecting her allies. Korea does a great job with historical mini-series, and this is one of the best. For a taste with spoilers on YouTube search Empress Ki Strength of a Thousand Men. See more Read all reviews
