Critic Reviews for Encore! Season 1

All Critics (20) | Top Critics (8)

A well-made, clever show that becomes more about how we change (and how much we don't) as we go from high school to adulthood.

The results are a joy to behold, and there won't be a dry eye in the house.

It's a sweet idea in theory, until it's actually happening, and then it just seems creepy.

Nov 13, 2019 | Full Review…

I am quite in love with the Kristen Bell-produced "Encore!," a machine for dredging up deep feelings, in which the cast of a high school musical reunites after many years to stage it again.

Nov 13, 2019 | Full Review…

The moments of emotional depth and humanity are rare - though sometimes quite touching - and the moments of cringing and overproduction are plentiful.

Nov 12, 2019 | Full Review…

Were it not for the evidence of a shared history on display, the adults playing kids in Annie may as well be strangers, and that lets some of the air out of Encore's intriguing setup.

The fact none of them has a shred of talent makes it all rather endearing, though the excessive OMGs! OMGs! OMGs! mean you need to be handy with the mute button.

Mar 25, 2020 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

It's a smoky fireplace of a reality show that radiates warmth and consistently caused my eyes to water. Like high school, though, it's easy to generalize about but its reality is far more complicated.

Dec 4, 2019 | Full Review…

After watching the first two episodes of Encore!, one thing is abundantly clear: Disney has a tear-jerking blast of family-friendly fun on its hands.

Dec 2, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Encore! is guilty of orbiting the cliches of theater as an accepting "family," and that as painful as high school is, it all gets better eventually. But it also subverts its own messaging.

Nov 15, 2019 | Full Review…

Stream it if you're a big musical theater geek or did drama in high school or college.

Nov 14, 2019 | Full Review…

Sweet nostalgia on warm, lovable musical reality show.

Great show, really enjoy looking back at high schools through the view of former drama students. It shows the upheaval and life changes people go through during and after high school. No one is immune.
  • Feb 12, 2020
    A fun, if extreme, idea.
  • Feb 11, 2020
This show is amazing and heart warming. my mother and I bond over our shared love of live musicals. she loves this show and asks to watch it with me constantly. The peek into old classmates lives while simultaneously reviving beautiful musicals is so amazing

Great TV! I wasn't even in musicals as a kid, but watching these older people reconnect and deal with their issues and see where their lives have gone has been inspirational. Plus you get to watch old people do young people things and they're usually pretty good by showtime! This show better have like 10 seasons!!!

This show is a very fun pastime for me when I finish watching the HSM series. Since I love musicals this show is perfect it also is funny and emotional at times. Overall it is pretty amazing for a show about previous high school musicals getting a reboot. I also learned about new musicals I should watch. One thing is the host Kristen Bell there is really no point to have her as a host. She is bark ever used and is only in intros. She still is a fun part of the show and sometimes participated!

    Cringy x 1,000,000,0000
  • Dec 20, 2019
    Encore is an excellent show!
  • Nov 23, 2019
This show is pure wish fulfillment, which is 100% in line with Disney's brand, but did not land well with me. It's a show about theater nerds getting to relive 'the good old days' which is a very sad and cringey concept to me. I hope others enjoy this show, but it's aggressively not for me.
