Tv Season Info

The year is 1968; it sees the birth of the Thames Valley Constabulary and the imminent closure of Crowley Station. The fate of Crowley Station also puts into question the fate of the police officers staffing it, including the retirement DCI Fred Thursday (Roger Allam) has been looking forward to. Newly promoted DS Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) is assigned a new partner, DC George Fancy. Unfortunately, the two don't get along because of what Morse sees as Fancy's inability to focus on the task in front of them. WPC Shirley Trewlove (Dakota Blue Richards), however, takes a fancy to Fancy, and the two start a relationship. Meanwhile, Joan Thursday (Sara Vickers) returns to Oxford, but not to the arms of her family. She and Morse keep bumping into each other at unexpected places. Season 5 of "Endeavour" also stars Anton Lesser as C. S. Reginald Bright, Sean Rigby as P. C. Jim Strange, and James Bradshaw as Dr. Max DeBryn.

The series is still (she admits, grudgingly) solidly made, yet we've now got to 1968 and I am beginning to think some of the time and attention so obviously lavished on the nostalgia could have been devoted to the plot.

Now in its fifth series, this superlative murder-mystery drama excels because its characters are deep and real, not anonymous parts in a kit that writers can swap in and out.

Viewers of this smashing series may well take to heart the aforementioned flood of goodbyes and the sense of a good thing over that descends at the end of season 5.

Unlike the sometimes needlessly graphic US crime series, with their plethora of psychotic characters, "Endeavour" practices a restraint that PBS viewers will welcome.
