Enlightened: Season 2 Photos

Tv Season Info

Amy Jellicoe (Golden Globe winner Laura Dern) has felt betrayed by Abaddonn Industries ever since she returned to the company - following a nervous breakdown and a stint in rehab in Season One - albeit in a dead-end position, in the basement with the other data-processing drones. In the second and final season, however, she may have found a way to get revenge after her coworker Tyler (Mike White) helps her hack into executive e-mails, and she discovers corporate corruption and malfeasance at the highest levels. But after feeding the potentially explosive information to an investigative reporter (Dermot Mulroney) at the Los Angeles Times, Amy's status as a full-blown whistle-blower could jeopardize her career; her relationships with her friends, colleagues, mother (Diane Ladd) and ex-husband, Levi (Luke Wilson)?who battles his own demons at the same Hawaiian retreat that Amy did; and, quite possibly, her freedom. The season's cast also includes Molly Shannon and James Rebhorn.

Critic Reviews for Enlightened Season 2

By the time Enlightened reaches Todd Haynes' unspeakably beautiful Season Two entry, "All I've Ever Wanted," Amy's journey comes to reflect her repeated statement of purpose, "You can be wise, and almost whole."

Even as we laugh at Amy's loony attempts to forge a new world, we understand, and are moved by, her longing for a purer soul and a kinder society.

What's most surprising about Enlightened is the intensity with which Amy and her friends get to us, how much of ourselves we may see in them, if we only have the temerity to allow it.

Unleash Amy and watch the endless repercussions in unsparing detail and laugh sardonically at your own stumbling way through the poisoned world. That's post-millennial entertainment!

If you're looking for a well-written, supremely acted and alternately hilarious and harrowing series, Enlightened is it.

The show's must-see second season is one of the best stories I've experienced in a long time.

I have been thinking about Enlightened a lot in 2017. I recently re-watched the entire series and it felt as fresh as anything made this year.

Contemporary TV is suddenly filled with shows starring charismatic yet ostentatiously flawed heroines: Homeland, The Mindy Project, Girls. Enlightened stands out because its vision is so much wider.

HBO doesn't owe it to us to keep Enlightened on the air; HBO owes it to itself. That's what you get when you bring something amazing into this beautiful, upsetting world.

Watching Enlightened feels something like hearing a blast of cymbals, a wake-up call. It's [season finale} one of the most powerful episodes of TV this year, a perfect ending to a perfect season.

"If everything is false and it's all a lie, even our personalities are fraudulent. How do you live a constructive and creative and positive life?" It's not an easy question but Enlightened has made great strides trying to answer it.

Audience Reviews for Enlightened: Season 2

This series was just so well-crafted. Amy is a complex, multi-faceted character with real depth. Laura Dern shines, as does Mike White as her shy, insecure coworker. Luke Wilson does a bang-up job of portraying so many of the dudes I've dated. Brilliant. Such a shame it was taken off the air.

It's really too bad this show never got renewed for the third season in the trilogy, but the ambiguity that runs through the rest of the show gets to live on I suppose. I can't believe I had never heard of this before, its honestly such a great little time capsule of the turn of the decade.

For a needlessly precise rating: 96/100 Amy Jellicoe is childish, naïve, selfish, self-centered. But she represents the dichotomy of all humans: she is noxious and enlightening, toxic and pure. She has hope. And that's a beautiful thing to have.

The fact HBO cancelled Enlightened is frustrating and heartbreaking. Season 2 was just as good, if perhaps even greater than season 1. Laura Dern continues to show why is she one of the best actresses working today. Someone bring this back.

The central arc comes to an end but not without feeling cheap in the process (which it plays self-knowingly, to give credit). Some events are rushed, others feel natural but nevertheless hurried, the show is ultimately satisfying but on its own heroine's terms. Compulsively watchable yet sadly underutilized.

WHY HBO? WHY COULDN'T YOU RENEW THIS FOR ONE MORE SEASONS?! The second season increasingly gains so much momentum. We learn more about the other few characters we even know and are introduced to an LA Times reporter (Dermot Mulroney) and the receptionist to the Abaddonn CEO (Molly Shannon) who only accelerate the drama and rhythm of the series. We start to root for Tyler and his struggle with happiness and cannot help to fall in love with Eileen's palpable sense of humanity. The discombobulated love triangle that really isn't a love triangle between Amy, the reporter, and her ex-husband is an even great sub-conflict in the season. Each episode gains so much momentum and excitement, it's a shame we'll never get to see what could have been.

On Enlightened's second season, Laura Dern and Mike White bring together a well-written, supremely acted, both blissful and sorrowful series. It is inspired, rich, fulfilling - poetic, to say the least, and, lastly, enlightened in its own terms - in its short 8 episodes.
  • Feb 18, 2014
The most unfortunate cancellation of last year. Enlightened is more complex, heartfelt, and empathetic in this final half of it's run, but it's just not the type of show that proved to be popular with HBO's audience. Honestly, I think it might have had a better chance if it aired on Showtime.
  • Feb 07, 2014
The second season brings the action to a boil, and shows fascinating new sides of the characters.
  • Dec 08, 2013
It's back, less boring and with funnier dialogue.
