SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Episodes works just as well in its second season, though the show's satire is less innocent and more aggressive.

Tv Season Info

Matt LeBlanc takes on the most difficult role of his life---playing Matt LeBlanc---in this TV-industry satire. Married Brits, Beverly and Sean Lincoln (Tamsin Greig, Stephen Mangan), came to the United States to produce a sitcom based on their hit UK programme, only to find that the new series was to be radically Americanised. In the Series 2 premiere, "Pucks!" scores big ratings, meaning that the separated Sean and Beverly—and star Matt who had a fling with her—must find a way to coexist and continue working together. As the series goes on, research shows that "Pucks!" is taking a ratings hit. But the good news is that viewers are responding favourably to the young cast, necessitating some rewrites to upcoming scripts. Matt, however, is not known as one who likes to share the spotlight. To also help "Pucks!" to a ratings bump, network exec Merc (John Pankow) wants Matt to land one of his former "Friends" costars for a guest appearance on the show. In the Searies 2 finale, Merc discovers that his wife and Matt had an affair; and Sean is devastated when Beverly turns up at an awards dinner with a date.

Episodes had a lot to prove. The good news is that series two... is better.

Matt LeBlanc is great as Matt LeBlanc: he's still got wonderful comedic timing and delivery, but he shows depth as an actor as he plays with our preconceived notions about "Joey."

While the humor can be as nasty and politically incorrect as anything on "Curb Your Enthusiasm," at its heart, "Episodes" is rooted in a very sweet romance.

Still fun, but the innocent first moments last season were better.

Episodes careens when it should while also knowing when to settle down and behave itself a bit

The music has really been the strong point of this series and, without fail, it underpins the dramatic moments really well.

Season 2 of the Hollywood satire still plays too broad, like Entourage written in Magic Marker. But Matt LeBlanc's understated performance as himself has gotten even better.

The cast are excellent value, but only Tamsin Greig seems to be playing for genuine emotional stakes.

I devoured these nine episodes in two sittings.

Everything seems much snappier -- without a dud line in sight... LeBlanc has remained something of a monster -- but he's a more convincing monster. And, importantly, one we might actually grow to like.
