Episodes (US): Season 3 (2014)

SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Episodes isn't so nimble in its third season, still retaining the series' penchant for clever personal dynamics between its hapless triad, but floundering with a lack of narrative direction and a stale take on Hollywood satire that is in need of rejuvenation.

Tv Season Info

Matt LeBlanc returns to the most difficult role of his life---playing Matt LeBlanc---in Series 3 of this TV-industry satire. Matt may be a popular fixture in Hollywood, but his personal and professional lives are in shambles. He desperately tries to gain custody of his children, but his efforts are seriously thwarted when he gets a DUI while driving with the kids in the car. Also, his ex-wife refuses to forgive him for sleeping with his stalker. On the set of "Pucks!" things aren't any better. Matt tries to convince the show's creators Beverly and Sean Lincoln (Tamsin Greig, Stephen Mangan), who are going through an emotionally draining marital crisis, to kill his character on the series so he can pursue a dream role on a new drama at NBC. But when they learn that the pilot was written by their former assistant Andrew (Oliver Kieran-Jones), whom they despise, they tell Matt there's no way he is leaving the show and must honour his contract. But with "Pucks!" ratings continuing to plunge, Matt may not be employed much longer.

Despite the triteness of the plot, some moments, such as Merc's Lear-esque fit of rage in the howling rain, were very funny. But the problem was that the rest of the programme was dogged by tedium.

If you took out the punchlines, it would be possible to deliver a plot summary and make it sound like a daytime drama...

Episodes succeeds by adding a layer of genuine sweetness and love among the core characters.

Episodes is not as cutting-edge as Girls but it's a lot funnier and maybe even more relatable for much of the audience (with the exception of entitled, 23-year-olds living in Brooklyn).

One of the few genuine sex farces on cable television... It seemed doubtful that the show's creators could keep those plates spinning for another round, but the third season introduces a fantastic new contrivance: a psychotic new network head.

The show is not any poorer for its broadness, of course. It's just... less British. And that's fine. We're still covered for that sort of thing, thanks largely to the superb "face work" of -- it has to be said -- the female cast members.

To the credit of creators David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik, most of the comic situations in this run of the sitcom would have been impossible in earlier episodes because they depend on the accumulation of history between the characters.

The key faultline is that Episodes has written itself into a cul-de-sac. There's nothing left to it apart from a series of relationships and most of the interesting things that can happen have already happened.

It's not bad, but sorry, Matt, we're probably best with those interminable Friends repeats...

Episodes... is something of a guilty pleasure of mine.
