"Everyone Else Burns" is a coming-of-age comedy following a Mancunian family and the puritanical Christian sect to whom they are devoted. The family is headed by patriarch David, played by Simon Bird and his amazing haircut. The family are steadfast in preparing for Armageddon and avoiding eternal damnation, although worldly temptations sometimes get in the way. As they navigate modern-day life, the show explores what it feels like to balance faith, family and identity in a world that could end tomorrow, even though it most likely will not.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A mirthful satire of religious zealotry that hits more than it misses, Everyone Else Burns is an agreeably irreverent sitcom.

Geordie Gray The Australian 12/16/2023
You won’t find any knee-slapping jokes in this comedy; rather, it’s a sunny, good-natured look at a dysfunctional family. And at just six episodes, it whizzes by. Go to Full Review

Sure, there are plenty of laughs to be had, not least from Bird’s insanely bad hairstyle and utterly grating manner, but at its heart Everyone Else Burns is a family drama with plenty of heart to balance out its healthy scepticism. Go to Full Review

A smart, well-made family sitcom that strikes an effective balance of prickly dysfunction and coming-of-age poignancy shouldn’t be such a rare thing on broadcast TV. But it is. Go to Full Review

Each performance in Everyone Else Burns is pitch perfect, from Kate O'Flynn's deadpan delivery as the put-upon matriarch to her son, Aaron's, pervasive disgust for his family and concurrent thirst for chaos. Go to Full Review

The humor is sly even if the situations are over the top. Go to Full Review
Joel Keller Decider 10/26/2023
While some aspects of Everyone Else Burns might get repetitive in a hurry, there is more than enough stories revolving around the Lewises trying to live in the world while prepping for Doomsday to make for a pretty funny show with well-rounded characters. Go to Full Review

Mohammed Anwar Ali M Aug 29 one the most comedy in years See more Jean R 11/24/2024 Incredibly entertaining take on a lovable, realistic family. It turns from a goofy exaggeration of religion to a transformative, heartfelt sitcom. See more Rebecca M 10/18/2024 Having spent my formative years in the Jehovahs Witness organisation, I found this series cleverly shows the social struggles of being part of a highly judgemental and hugely repressive religious group. Although the situations are slightly exagerrated to bring comedic value (but not so much that you can't recognise the hypocritical side of things), I found watching the show particularly thought provoking. Putting off ones life for a paradise that only exists after a long looming end of the world as we know it (Armageddon) is a sad affair and is unfortunately what happens for these individuals. This is cleverly written and exposes what these organisations do to people but also highlights the joys that occur in ones life as one moves away from and begins to experience just those little wonderful moments of freedom that come with starting to step into this beautiful and amazing life and existence. Life means so much more when you finally realise paradise is right here already. See more Amelia M 04/06/2024 not funny at all. I'm not sure what the critics saw in this. See more James D 11/19/2023 If you can get past Simon Bird's hair, this is a really excellent show. It's rare to find something that (gently) satirises religion without being outright mean and offensive. There's a lot to like in the family and the central relationship, and the script is really funny (though the direction occasionally fights this, like by using super dark lighting) . Hopefully the networks show enough faith to keep it going for at least another couple of seasons. See more Dave F 11/10/2023 Most of the comedies that are being shown on the CW are funny, and I enjoy shows from other countries, but this is a huge miss. Not funny at all. Not going to make it through one episode. See more Read all reviews
