Eyewitness: Season 1 Reviews

November 25, 2016
Sometimes tight, engrossing, thriller that at times feels like it's trying too hard to justify its 10-episode run. Gets a bit unnecessarily complicated and convoluted as it moves along.

The pilot episode is a model of expositional economy that lays down a complicated premise in just a few minutes, then adds complicating elements one by one.

Even if one were to exclusively count the procedural thrill of such murder-centric stories, Eyewitness comes up staggeringly short of what it's going for.

Tonally, though, the palette points to a show that is fairly suffocating.

While the investigation is dragged out a little bit longer than necessary over the 10 episodes, the ambient pleasures of watching Nicholson and her two young co-stars are enough to keep anyone plugging through the more boring stretches.

TV isn't often all that interested in the grittier aspects of life, death, and addiction in unexceptional small towns... When it focuses on those elements of its narrative, the viewpoint of Eyewitness becomes not just valuable but admirably precise.
