"The Heap" wrapped up, tantalizingly, with an eminent reunion between Lorne and Lester, potentially setting up a coup for Bemidji's most relentless cop.

And for a series that has thus far built a compelling tale around the notion that, if given the right circumstances, anything can and will happen, the idea that sometimes things just work out sounds just about right.

"The Heap" featured more fantastic work from both Allison Tolman and Martin Freeman. The series has truly hit its creative stride.

Creator Noah Hawley took his series in a surprising direction tonight when midway through, he jumped ahead a year. The time shift felt almost jarring, initially. In thinking about it, though, the jump is necessary for this story to fully pay off.

The story in the original film takes place over only a few days... TV functions differently, though, and I like that Noah Hawley keeps pushing this new Fargo simultaneously closer to and further away from its inspiration.

"The Heap" is a respite meant to steel us for whatever blood rains down around these characters next. But it's a stylish, audacious one that gives me complete faith Noah Hawley knows where he's going with this.
