What to Know

Critics Consensus

A back-to-basics caper populated by the likes of a mesmerizing Juno Temple and a thick slice of Hamm, Fargo's fifth season is a superb return to peak form.

Season 5 restores the dark-comic tone — that existential screwball, a play on Joel and Ethan’s — but still succumbs to some of the same problems, like Hawley’s increasing preference for loudly stated themes and clashing acting styles. Go to Full Review

Much of the pleasure of this Fargo season has come from watching her MacGyver herself out of peril with wicked smarts. But despite Dot’s savviness, the viewer is never quite convinced that she’s out of trouble. Go to Full Review

There are moments when Season 5 of Fargo seems to be trying almost too hard to be weird and great, but that's a fine ambition to have. There are also moments of absolutely inspired lunacy. Go to Full Review

Season 5 feels more like an event than just one more season of the show. In an age when the avalanche of content seems infinite, it feels great that the show takes its time to come up with the best possible story before coming back to our screens. Go to Full Review

Fargo understands this rage more fully, partially because it understands that the battle for patriarchal power is far from over... Go to Full Review

This iteration blissfully delivers the desired off-beat humor and distinctive, inimitable violence. Go to Full Review

Jack F @RT39667463 Feb 24 I stopped watching after two and a half episodes, but then gave it another shot. There were a handful of "can't wait to see what happens next" moments. But, silly dialogue and the cartoonishness of just about all of the male characters kept me from really getting hooked in. They also take their audience for granted by insulting large swaths of the population - men, woman, Christians, Repuplicans, police officers, patriots, rich people, a past and current president, puppeteers, and golfers. Had they put as much effort into making the season entertaining, as they did into pushing their tired agenda, it might have been pretty good. See more Mark C @RT46032481 Feb 18 Absolutely LOVED this season. A refreshing take on the captor/captive storyline. The direction and cinematgraphy were top notch, only topped by its amazing score. Juno Temple KILLED it. Jon Hamm was deliciously gross. Jennifer Jason Leigh was amazing (best character arc) David Rysdahl was amazing. Lamorne Morris was great. Richa Moorjani was great. One look at Dave Foley's character and you know you're at home with Fargo. And last but not least, Sam Spruell brings an unexpected supernatural element to the season and absolutely embodied the character he was playing. See more Wayne C @Voicefromadyingempire Feb 14 This could gave been good - but the didacticism and cartoonishness of the characters in this enterprise will be insufferable for anyone who does not think that being tied up in a chair and being yelled at that men are monsters, the sisterhood generally amazing apart from a few bad eggs who ‘betray all women’ (a line in the script!), that libertarians - Trump supporters - are wife-beating, gun toting bible spouting psychopathic murderers. The series is plagued by the failure to distinguish between artistry and college level sloganeering. What comes through most clearly is how the desire to be politically instructive completely fails to understand the kind of people it believes need instruction. The first two series of Fargo maintained the style and cleverness of the Cohens, This takes some of that style, for a while is even gripping, and works with a great female character - though why she is attracted to such a sap of a husband makes no sense - and then goes to complete shit. See more Sandra A @Sancan Jan 30 Fargo 5 was great positive surprise. Very well balanced, well paced, great acting, original ending. It looks all team members made their job. See more Marco T @RT13076648 Jan 14 Fantastic show and season. The grandma and Munch are insanely well played. As every Fargo season, watch it in the deepest winter you can get at your latitude.
