Critics Consensus

Fear the Walking Dead recycles elements of its predecessor, but it's still moody and engrossing enough to compete with the original.

Critic Reviews for Fear the Walking Dead Season 1

All Critics (63) | Top Critics (33)

Fear the Walking Dead feels like a worthy extension because it gives another perspective, from Los Angeles, on a global crisis. There are stories beyond Rick Grimes and his fearless, tested band.

The new series lacks a beating heart -- even a black one.

Nothing serves a horror story like a good build. Or, in the case of L.A. itself, a slow crumble.

Even if zombies aren't your cup of TV, there is plenty to appreciate about the construction of Fear the Walking Dead.

Fear the Walking Dead prequel might just as well be called Milking The Walking Dead For All It's Worth.

I doubt that the rampaging hordes - and by this I mean the bloodthirsty and highly opinionated legions of "Walking Dead" fans - will eat that up.

Aug 21, 2015 | Rating: C+ | Full Review…

It feels like writers are trying so hard to humanize these characters, they're forgetting their audience. Society is breaking down and people are being eaten; however, it doesn't seem to be impacting this series.

Fear The Walking Dead has a solid start that encourages you to keep an eye on the story. AMC knows how to exploit the zombie hen for the golden eggs. [Full Review in Spanish]

For the most part, Fear the Walking Dead aims to pick up something the mothership lost along the way, specifically an existential horror behind all the gore.

Jun 18, 2018 | Full Review…

What I can take away from the first 60-minutes of "Fear the Walking Dead" is that it's aiming to be rich in characters, with Frank Dillane stealing the show.

May 8, 2017 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It's admirable how boldly Fear The Walking Dead establishes itself as a subtler, slower burn than its guts-and gore-filled predecessor, but the shambling pace may end up testing the patience of more restless viewers.

If The Walking Dead is a horror story, Fear the Walking Dead is a mood piece, more artful than the original series.

Audience Reviews for Fear the Walking Dead: Season 1

It was a nice spin-off of the walking dead.

    Awesome! Loved to watch it

I think it would have been better to show the life of different characters in different episodes to really understand what happened in this univers, like showing in each episode the life of a doctor, a police officer, a criminal, etc. Like Black Mirror. But talking about Fear The Walking Dead, the events are very slow and the characters without empathy or something different from The Walking Dead. I didn't like at all and would never recommend this TV show.

Fear The Walking closes the gap between the start of the zombie apocalypse and the moment Rick wakes up. It has a very interesting premise, and that is what keeps the show alive. Was it necessary? No.

I actually like the first season of FTWD. Unlike TWD, we the audience get to see a glimpse into what the downfall of civilization and the world looked like pre apocalypse. It was quite chaotic and eventful. Full of tension and drama. However I did feel like at times the whole season felt very rushed. Of course thats what happens when you only have six episodes in the first season. Perhaps if the show had 8 or 9 episodes in the first season we might of gotten better characters moments and more zombie action. Again I did like this season, but I also didn't love it. The characters at times made very bad decisions and that is because the writing was bad to begin with. I felt we could have done with more character backstory and bonding. There also should have been WAY more zombies and gore. It just seemed liked what season 1 of FTWD was missing was more. More episodes, more gore and blood, more zombies, more character moments, more everything. One thing that was truly great about this season though was Nick. Actor Frank Dillane did a masterful job with this character. I don't think season 1 would have been good at all if it wasn't for Nick. He was a great character this season who adapted very well to the harsh new world and I enjoyed him quite much. All told, the inaugural season of Fear was not bad, but it certainly wasn't great. It was just...ok.

I've just started watching this due to Covid-19 lockdown. Again more zombie cliches such as people in zombie films/series acting as if they have never seen a zombie film/series, so queue shooting to the chest with exposition about how they 'just wont go down', characters trying to reason with zombified friends early on, inflated drama about having to execute bitten members of 'the group' before they turn etc etc. By the end of the season you will have been beaten over the head by how the real monster all along is......man/government/big pharma.... yawn. The first season culminates with 'the group' releasing a stadium full of zombies on a hospital, killing hundreds of mainly incapacitated wounded people and medical staff to save a junkie. Because the junkie is one of the characters son. Its not terrible but it doesn't make a lot of sense and I'm guessing would more appeal to the conspiracy theory fan and hardcore zombie genre lover such as I.
