Critic reviews for Pilot
Fear the Walking Dead, slow in its pilot but promising, needs to decide which version of this story it wants to be.

Fear the Walking Dead takes ample advantage of its large setting and new blood. From churches and alleyways to beaches and freeways, the slow-boil large landscape aspects of the story are exciting.
All told, this isn't the strongest series premiere I've ever seen. The Walking Dead's first episode is much better and more memorable. But it's not bad, either.
One of the pleasures of Fear the Walking Dead, then, might be these characters figuring out how to deal with the zombie outbreak on their own, on the fly.
From the casting to the writing to the camera work to the family drama, the goal here seems to be something a little more artful than what's come before. And the potential is there.
"Pilot" is nowhere near that good [as the original's pilot]. But it is strong enough to suggest a bright future for this spin-off.
