...although it doesn't rank up there with the very best, "Fearless" is entertaining, most especially because Helen McCrorly, an award-winning theater actor, plays the lead, and, boy, is she good!

While the series gets off to a stuttering start, it's certainly not irredeemable. The storytelling is brisk and packed with plot, the themes are important, McCrory is dazzling on screen and there is a potentially interesting thriller ready to come out.

The result looks like being a classy and dark paranoid political thriller - but also, perhaps, an unluckily timed one.

With her high cheekbones and saleable purple leather jacket, McCrory's flawed renegade carried a drama so far overcrowded with ingredients and exposition.

A hook of a central case, tantalising layers and complexities, international intrigue and codenames... put that all together with a performer as strong as McCrory and it adds up to thrilling TV.

By the third episode, the story has grown far more complex, leaving a lot to unravel in the final three episodes of the miniseries.

What I love about Fearless is its messiness: Emma's frantic and complicated life, and her relish for every single one of its constituent parts, feel so wonderfully replete.

If Fearless was a touch overwrought, with too many characters jostling for attention and a great deal of threat looming without consequence, it was also gripping and undeniably intriguing.

If your appetite for dark tales of official malfeasance is strong, Fearless will go down easily enough, helped by the usual superior British cast.
