Flaked: Season 1 Reviews

December 7, 2018
I don't want this guy to win. I don't want him to have a victory. He deserves what he gets. And I don't want to watch that.

Flaked... is just another exasperating exploration of stunted white male adulthood.
March 11, 2016
Flaked is another horrid post-Togetherness dramcom that's too cute to be serious and too lame to be funny.

There's a vulnerability to Arnett's performance that's subtly devastating.

It is not as original, lacerating, or self-aware as Louie and Girls, the progenitors of this trend, or as good as Transparent, the perfector of it, but it contains a deep and precise character sketch.

Flaked is to be commended for really capturing its setting, shooting very clearly on location and focusing on the issues facing this community right now.

It's uncomfortably dull, paced like molasses flowing through a stirrer straw, and completely pointless.

Perhaps the problem is that we've seen this story too many times: upper-middle-class white men behaving like frat bros and overcoming their malaise through the love of a good (young) woman.
July 14, 2016
Flaked almost succeeds in tricking you into thinking it's a love story, but it's not. It's really a story about male friendship - insecure, immature and loyal.

The end result isn't entirely insufferable - but it's pretty close to it.

Man-child's mature world is more tragedy than comedy.

The relationship is promising, you might want to keep it streaming for a few episodes.

It's a leaden, soggy mess that only gets messier as it goes.

...Flaked is not nearly as deep or profound as it desperately wants to be, but there's just enough of a decent blend in humor and drama to make it a satisfactory diversion.

March 11, 2016
It's light and prone to wandering, but the symmetry between the show's characters and its setting gives this serio-comedy a necessary layer that distinguishes it enough to make watching an enjoyable, but not necessarily substantial experience.
March 11, 2016
Flaked is yet another television show about intentionally insufferable, middle-aged man-boys who think they are cute when they are really just so smug you want to hit them with a bag of kale chips.
March 11, 2016
Shows such as Love... and now Flaked begin with so much slouching and moseying and wallowing in their characters' benign miseries that they come off as snobbish and unwelcoming.
March 10, 2016
Any potential saving graces of Flaked - and boy is it a small few - are completely and enthusiastically negated by the show's desultory, spiritless tone, which makes its four-hour story feel 40 hours long.

This is Arnett's third series for Netflix, following Arrested Development and BoJack Horseman, and unfortunately all it does is shout loudly that Arnett was sick of being cast as the goof or the alcoholic horse.
March 10, 2016
Arnett has always shown a knack for uncomfortable comedy; in this case, the discomfort is in the forefront and the humour is way, way at the back of the room.

March 10, 2016
In short, there are very good reasons why Will Arnett would have wanted to make Flaked and why Netflix would have made it possible. The reasons for viewers to watch are less compelling.
March 10, 2016
The series gets more substantive and quicker starting in Episode 6, but over all the pieces - man-boys on the prowl, bromance, occasional forays into seriousness - fit together uncomfortably.

A good portrait of a fallen man and the place he has fallen into. Promising - but also frustrating.
