Fleabag: Season 1 Reviews

January 25, 2019
"Fleabag" starts off like a dirtier "Bridget Jone's Diary," but it soon develops into a more nuanced and heartbreaking (still humorous) novella about a person trying to find her truest self.

Fleabag reminded me of the brave aspects of many of the Sad Clowns we've encountered over the years, who use the tools they know best in order to cope. They're in a battle with grief, despair, loneliness, and worse, and they refuse to succumb.

With so much grief and anger seething under its surface, it's a miracle that Fleabag manages to be so funny.

[Fleabag] joins the likes of You're the Worst, Transparent and Casual in the realm of gut-punch comedy.

Hilarious heartbreaker.

Fleabag's creator and star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is so intoxicatingly hilarious and lovely - a mixture of wildly inappropriate and devilishly adorable - that you mostly don't see the onrushing sadness until it's too late and you're devastated.

Fleabag is an original. She's at once a mischief-maker and a figure of pathos.
September 19, 2016
Waller-Bridge's awkwardness, her moments of rampant egoism followed by crushing bleakness, make Fleabag one of the most distinctive female characters in recent memory.

What sets the show apart isn't the surface quality of its humor but its restless, almost feral energy and its slap-in-the-face attitude.

Like a lovely young woman drunkenly flirting with a stranger in a bar, the first thing the new Amazon series Fleabag does is dare you to think that you know her.
September 16, 2016
Fleabag slowly assimilates serious subject matter into a viciously funny comedic format.

In a medium that's increasingly driven by (mostly male) auteurs, this is a refreshingly singular approach and a gamble that pays off because Waller-Bridge, who some may recognize from her work on Broadchurch, is such a charismatic, complicated presence.
September 16, 2016
It's another entry into the growing canon of really wonderful comedies that also make you want to cry, the sort of show that makes you write down a note like "cheerfully nihilistic."

Though it may win you over five minutes in with the year's best masturbation joke, it's first-and-foremost a brilliant dry comedy about life-shattering trauma.

Fleabag" pulls off the neat trick that a number of fine comedies are capable of these days: Long after it's pulled you in with its... cutting wit and messily human characters, it reveals that it's actually a tragedy.

If Fleabag begins as a collection of single-girl moments, patience through a few episodes reveals a fuller, sadder, more multidimensional story anchored by Waller-Bridge's bracing honesty, inventive uses of jumbled time and an abrupt editing style.
