Forever: Season 1 Reviews

October 3, 2018
The show feels built from an Ikea-particle-board notion of committed love.

With a premise as potentially fun as this, and all past 200 years of history to play with, the show shouldn't come off as a listless, by-the-numbers rehashing of a Sherlockian knock-off.

It's all fairly disposable.

ABC's Forever is a Frankenstein's monster of crime procedurals, drawing on both supernatural and case-of-the-week shows to create an ultimately dull new series.

It is hard to imagine that Forever will live long on ABC's schedule.

I can see the headlines now: "Forever lasts six weeks."
September 22, 2014
The combination of will-they-or-won't-they romance, detective stories and supernatural hooey clashes rather than melds. If the people behind Forever can't solve this fundamental flaw, a better title might be "One Season."

Just OK, although I like Gruffudd in the role.
September 22, 2014
Forever places an appealing cast in the unfortunate position of playing out a storyline in which many elements are either unexplained or simply don't make sense.
September 22, 2014
Not even Judd Hirsch, as the only one who knows Morgan's secret, made me me want to stay an hour longer, much less forever.
September 22, 2014
Feeling familiar is the least of Forever's problems. The worst offense is wasting Gruffudd's assets on an underdeveloped premise better suited for a made for TV movie.

[Forever] is nothing more than a shameless Sherlock ripoff, from the opening music to the British-accented protagonist with a knack for deductive reasoning. Why stop there when there are more shows to crib?

Many of the new network shows seem as densely plotted as Russian novels on steroids. Then there's ABC's Forever, which comes off like a show a couple of drunks scribbled out on a cocktail napkin.

Despite its strong cast and potentially interesting premise, Forever fails to distinguish itself among a network landscape littered with quasi-serialized crime procedurals.

If you think this sounds like far-fetched borrowing from Castle, Elementary, and a ton of other crime procedurals, you're not the only one.
September 19, 2014
Too much of Forever is either overwrought or half-baked.

An oddly uninvolving drama that forces one to contemplate what Castle might look like if the lead character couldn't die. Star Ioan Gruffudd is likable enough, but the rules of the show tend to blunt any emotional attachment.
September 18, 2014
There's no gravity here. No weight to the character or his unique ability. It's just a gimmick to find some new way to tie in to the "Sherlockian" subgenre.
September 18, 2014
This ABC show is the poster child for this fall's crop of meh dramas.

While it's nice to encounter an immortal who doesn't need to suck blood, and while the pilot moves forward with a spring in its step, "Forever" is ultimately pretty forgettable.
