Set during the early days of World War II, Season 1 of the mystery series opens with Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen), a veteran of World War I, returning to work in Hastings, along Britain's southern coast, after being rebuffed in his effort to transfer to the War Department. D ue to a shortage of male police officers, young Samantha "Sam" Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks) is transferred from the Mechanised Transport Corps to serve as his driver, though her talents stretch far beyond steering; and Sgt. Paul Milner (Anthony Howell), a r ecent war veteran seriously injured during Britain's ill-fated Norway campaign, soon assists him . Among the cases he tackles: the murder of the German wife of a local magistrate; the slaying of a hotel owner at a gathering organized by a fascist sympathizer; the death of a conscientious objector while in police custody; and the slaying of a local lorry driver.

This is quality, smart stuff -- plot points hinge on citizenship classifications, ration coupons, the location of safe houses. It requires that viewers watch carefully, and pay attention to details.
