But it looks like the series will continue to deliver consistent chuckles and cleverly subvert stereotypes of Asian American experience-even if they come wrapped in a fairly standard family-sitcom package.

The show can be exceptional in its smallest moments, particularly regarding its smallest cast members (and its oldest, with Soong), as well as its great use of throwaway comments and referential cutaways.

The crucial difference between Fresh Off The Boat and other sitcoms is that even when Fresh Off The Boat indulges in typical sitcom tropes, they very often emerge from more unexpected sources.
