I'm disappointed that the finale (and the entire season, I think) passed without a single "clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose." But coach Taylor's pep talk at practice was almost better.

FNL remains at the top of its game while also continuing to depict Texas as much more than a drawling board of cartoonish characters. That's basically a first on network television

Bravo to a small masterpiece of an episode and a performance that was something altogether greater.

Will this team even be in shape to play a game in next week's episode? We're entering a season where that's not even a given, and it's an exciting place to be.

Much that was great remains - in the cast members who carry over, and in the show's desire to detail the struggles of everyday life in small-town America.

Don't think on it too much. Just appreciate the top-tier quality.

There's definitely a joy to this series, no matter how dire things get for its characters.

The real glory of Friday Night Lights is its uncanny ability to take something that shouldn't really make a TV show and squeeze stories and characters out of it that resonate beyond the dusty limits of Dillon County.

What has made FNL so riveting over its run is that while the town is football obsessed, nothing that happens between the goalposts is as compelling as the journey before the lights go on.

Friday Night Lights is rather brilliantly reinventing itself on the fly.

Several of the new characters experience the kind of wrenching/difficult life choices that we expect to see on this show, and the young actors do extremely good work.

Quirky, funny, smart, wonderful acting, surprise cameos by cherished actors (Steve Harris, The Practice), and a one-two punch by Chandler and Britton that is unbeatable. What's not to love?

With plenty of frankness and compassion, the Friday Night Lights writers continue to provide Friday night with its brightest light.

By the end of the opening hour, you're already engaged by Coach Taylor's challenge to turn the East Dillon stragglers into guys who can complete the phrase ''Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose'' without mumbling.

Friday Night Lights is too good, really, to be on network TV - which is probably why DirecTV subscribers got to see the fourth season first.
