It's not a realistic world, but the way Friends from College casually digs into the social perfectionism of so-called successful people feels about right.

It was not secretly good, though it may have had some good-enough things about it. It was bad.

It resonated with me enough to make me keep watching[,] and to even connect to some of it, while also wondering how much better this series might have been if the volume on its characters and situations had been turned down just a little lower.

Friends From College is like the New Year's Eve of TV shows. Sparkly, fun on the outside and full of pretty people, but in reality disappointing and hollow.

It's a very strong ensemble, and the writing yields some amusing sequences... But the show doesn't have much narrative momentum, which makes the eight episodes at times feel slightly disconnected.

Too much of the action depends upon someone suddenly doing something out of character. That's not revelatory comic drama. That's just a cheat.

It's a show with a chronic case of the "you had to be theres," and about as much fun to be around.

For all its good intentions, Friends from College never rises above undergraduate puerility.

All this would be bearable if Friends from College was funny, but the dialogue is more often than not the sort of witless gabble that passes for naturalism, and decent jokes are mistimed.
July 18, 2017
The cast's collective and individual familiarity does not save Friends from College from being confusing at best, and irritating in large measure.
July 18, 2017
The show's biggest crime is that it overestimates its audience's tolerance for watching people screw up.
July 17, 2017
Old jokes are rehashed, old grudges dredged up, old songs played on the stereo, and since it'd take so much effort to fully catch an outsider up, the effort isn't made.

It's not an uninteresting twist on the old-friends-reunite formula, but by the end of the first episode it's crowded out a lot of those actual old friends in favor of infidelity dramedy.

There's more at stake than in your average sitcom, but the antics are juvenile, and the tone is all over the place.
July 14, 2017
The cast dynamic of Friends From College doesn't support Eichner's most common on-screen characteristics or the diminished versions demanded here.

The result is a comedy-drama whose comedy is grating and whose drama doesn't really engage with its essential sadness.
July 13, 2017
Is Friends From College a knowing show about the decline of the communal television experience and the limitation of the cable antihero model when extended to comedy? Or is it just a bad show?
July 13, 2017
What a cast. And what a waste. Friends From College is one of the year's biggest disappointments.

The world of the show is ill-defined, has no rules or consistency and the stakes are unimportant because you can't root for a single person here.
July 13, 2017
If you regard the show as a series of unconnected short plays or sketches, rather than as the long-term working out of any of these characters' twisted-together fates, it becomes automatically more successful.
