Critic Reviews for From Dusk Till Dawn Season 1

It's hard to say how the show will develop as it gets into the bulk of the actual story from Tarantino's script or as Rodriguez abdicates the director's chair to other filmmakers but this is a solid set-up installment.

Fans of the film will devour the TV series, and nonfans might give it a shot. Just be forewarned that it's not Blue Bloods. It's more like cold blood.

What's the point of remaking something if you can't do it better than the original?

The characters are engaging, the humor winning in its darkness. There was enough to appreciate in the first episode that it made me eager to see more.

On this evidence, From Dusk Till Dawn has made a healthy transition from big screen to small.

I suppose you could save time by just going back and watching the original movie (which starred George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino, who wrote the script), but if you liked that one, you'll almost certainly dig this.

As fun as it may eventually turn out to be, From Dusk till Dawn doesn't offer much encouragement that things will change.

The characters, the sympathetic ones, are rounded enough so that you feel for them a little when things threaten to go or go bad. It has more of a moral center.

Rodriguez turns [the] pattern upside down so frequently that, of course, we quickly anticipate the opposite ending for various characters. That's probably fine with Rodriguez because he knows he already has our attention.

It seems the series may have some trouble distinguishing itself from the original film, though spread out over 10 episodes, it does promise to take the concepts deeper.

Audience Reviews for From Dusk Till Dawn: Season 1

Robert Rodriguez adapts his cult horror film From Dusk Till Dawn into a 10-episode season of television. However, it becomes quite clear very fast that the material just isn't suited for a television format. And, the cast that is put together doesn't measure up to their film counterparts. Additionally, the mythology that is developed for the "vampires" is terrible (as they actually turn out to be snake people), and there's a bunch of cliched nonsense about prophecies and gods. But even as its own thing, the show is poorly constructed; bouncing around between different characters and their backstories without clear transitions. And the backstories all feel like filler, adding little to the main story. From Dusk Till Dawn: Season 1 has some entertaining action and few intriguing mysteries, but it's mixed in with a lot of garbage that drags down the show.
