What to Know

Critics Consensus

Glossy as a magazine cover and often just as thin, Funny Woman nevertheless packs a lot of charm thanks to a resplendent Gemma Arterton.

John Anderson Wall Street Journal 01/05/2024
It is Ms. Arterton’s show when all is said and done. And though she is far better known in the U.K. than she is here, that is quite likely to change. Go to Full Review

[Artenton's Barbara] teeters around on kitten heels, margarine hair piled as high as the show’s many, many clichés. So why did I enjoy it so much? Partly it is Arterton, a woman perfectly suited to playing one of Nick Hornby’s giddy, superficial heroines. Go to Full Review

Really, it’s a Gemma Arterton performance with a comedy-drama attached. She is luminous in it, and the show is so dependent on her talents that it’s essentially a one-woman vehicle. Go to Full Review

It’s the feisty, fearless sort of heroine we like to see, and Arterton does it very well. Go to Full Review
Jenny Nixon Common Sense Media 05/15/2024
This show's tone bounces back and forth from slapstick farce to social commentary, which doesn't allow it to reach its full potential on either front. Go to Full Review
Martin Kudlac ScreenAnarchy 05/03/2023
A feel-good comedy series about the first British female comic in an alternative history style. While Arterton portrays the protagonist as happy-go-lucky and radiant, the depiction of the swinging 60s does not avert the wide-spread sexism and gender-bias. Go to Full Review

David B. M @Meltoons Aug 1 Funny Woman is like watching the great TV shows of the 60s (of which I'm part of that generation) but with edge and more social consciousness. Sometimes it slips easily into total goofiness, other times it is downright serious and socially aware, but always it is watchable, fun and well-produced. See more Chris H @RT25497582 03/12/2025 The only drawback to Funny Woman is the extremely limited number of episodes. It is well-written, well acted, entertaining, and relevant now. Bring us more of these characters and story! See more Tom F @RT55173143 06/12/2024 Gemma Atherton is charming and the show tries to do some interesting things with mixed success. Like most series about comedy that aren’t Hacks, they really don’t do comedy very well. See more The_Matthew S @RT40494941 03/27/2024 Is she going to open for Mrs. Maisel? See more sally b @RT51036825 02/11/2024 Entertaining show, with great music callbacks for us oldsters. See more Richard E @RT55691732 01/25/2024 The first several episodes have been surprisingly good. The lead actress, Gemma Arterton, shines in the starring role. See more Read all reviews
