Galavant: Season 1 (2015)

SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: While the jokes in Galavant ride the line of predictability, their execution, along with campy themes and silly musical numbers, make it memorably entertaining.

Critic Reviews for Galavant Season 1

All Critics (40) | Top Critics (18)

The first two episodes, together making up last night's one-hour premiere, had so much more going for it than I ever would have imagined.

Galavant proves again, alas, that just being incredibly good-natured isn't quite enough to create a show you'd want to watch every week.

Mar 13, 2019 | Full Review…

Galavant, in short, is weird as hell. It is light and fluffy, earnest while also not skimping on post-modern charm, like "The Princess Bride" but with singing and dancing and slightly more candy-coating.

Galavant is mostly a savory treat from the musical team of Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. These guys know what they're doing. And this time they're doing it with a welcome edge in rousing, ribald times.

Galavant certainly isn't like anything else currently on network television, which makes it consistently intriguing in the way anything different from the norm can keep your attention, and yet it's also not quite what it should be either.

Jan 5, 2015 | Full Review…

No part of the equation that makes up Galavant is subtle. It piles on the songs, the choreography, the bawdy humor and the clever writing.

The series does try to develop its characters, but Galavant never quite finds a way to ideally pull together its gonzo comedic spirit and musical aspirations.

Mar 13, 2019 | Full Review…

Admittedly, in the 22-minute format, Galavant's grand adventure feels a little rushed and bumpy. But it's got a cast that's making the most of every moment of screentime.

Mar 13, 2019 | Full Review…

Galavant is and likely always will remain a solid show. The acting is good, wonderfully bouncing between tongue-in-cheek and genuine performances. The sets and cinematography are excellent, despite the show's limited budget, and then there are the songs.

Mar 12, 2019 | Full Review…

Galavant largely overcomes the challenges that have traditionally bedeviled TV musicals with rambunctious energy, cheeky lyrics and music.
