The second season of Game Of Thrones has done a fair amount of shifting from the book, A Clash Of Kings, but I haven't been bothered by almost any of it... the story still maintains the core themes and emotions that motivated the book.

Game of Thrones... upped the ante across the board on "The Old Gods and the New," delivering an episode with endless action, one shocking development after another and a royal slap that could be felt across all of Westeros.

No, nothing happened along the lines of a smoke demon birth or supernatural regicide, but "The Old Gods and the New" was filled some intensely heinous human events. Just some amazing, killer sequences.

After last week's thematically spastic episode, it's refreshing to see that a simple and direct, albeit unambitious, theme unites the various plot strands in "The Old Gods and the New."
