As ever with Game of Thrones, it's all excellently put together, it's just the reasons that leave something to be desired. It is a tale full of sound and fury, told by - well, you know the rest.

The cinematography was spectacular.

Here, in these moments, Sapochnik delivers the most fluid sequences of action and spectacle that have come to define the later seasons of the show. It's utterly mesmerizing and engulfing.

"The Bells" is full of characters being their dumbest, most ill-considered selves, solely in the pursuit of momentary conflicts and payoffs.

The Bells fell into the category of "dumb entertainment," and that's not a bad thing - but it's a lot to unpack.

It was shocking, and like the best of "Thrones," unexpected. But you can't say we weren't warned.

As a technical piece of filmmaking... "The Bells" is a masterpiece. As the culmination of the arcs of some of the show's most important characters, it is, if not a complete failure, then certainly a true disappointment.

There is a way to get to Daenerys, flying high above King's Landing, deciding to burn the whole thing down even though she's already victorious. But "The Bells" didn't get there. It wasn't even close.

If we're supposed to buy Dany turning Mad Queen after seasons of building her up as a hero and a revolutionary, why did she get about 3.5 seconds of screen time once she started burning everything down?

No TV episode has ever looked more impressive than this one. But the technical genius wasn't accompanied by the storytelling equivalent. As a result, the 80-plus minutes soon began to feel punishing.

I found it one of the most powerful, most viscerally truthful, hours of television I have ever seen.

What The Bells shows is a world in which the powerful take what they want, the identity of the good guys and the bad guys depends solely on whose side you're taking yourself, and nobody is going to get a happy ending.

So it turns out there is an enemy more fearsome than the Night King for the long-suffering folk of Westeros after all. It's the woman who's come to save them.

Whether that plan can still coalesce into a satisfying "GOT" ending will be decided next week, but with so much hinging on accepting this reversal by Daenerys... that is feeling like another long shot.

"The Bells," marked the end for five of Game of Thrones' major characters-four to death and one to total madness. And all of these endings, especially the one that led to the complete destruction of King's Landing, came with major problems.
