Critic Reviews for The Laws of Gods and Men
Not only did Peter Dinklage win another Emmy with that scene [his speech]...but it's a glorious, truly awesome (in the sense of inspiring awe) ending to the episode.
This week's episode of Game of Thrones, "Laws of Gods and Men" showed us that in Westeros, the laws of gods and men are one in the same, and that justice, fairness and virtue are all fickle.
Varys is more like the Lorax, but instead of speaking for the trees, he speaks for the realm. .
This episode features the most heartbreaking betrayal yet. Plus, Peter Dinklage giving a stirring performance.
The reason the show triumphs as a series and not just as spectacle is because showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss never lose sight of the fact that it takes a lot of extremely small moving parts to add up to something so impressive.
I could have sworn I heard a duh-dun-DUN. But prior to that, Peter Dinklage's full-body performance delivered just the right amount of drama.
"The Laws of Gods and Men" is a Game of Thrones episode bookended by two characters seeking justice, a malleable concept in a world where no less than four people laying claim to the Iron Throne.
Game Of Thrones came roaring back this week, with an excellent episode that showed new directions for many of the major players.
This episode revolved around Tyrion Lannister resulting in the season's best episode since the death of that little twit Joffrey.
How about that acting by Peter Dinklage? His seething, sneering rage-entirely justified, by the way-reminded me why this show's creators were so sure from the start that he simply had to play Tyrion.
Peter Dinklage, you may now collect your Emmy.
While Game of Thrones isn't exactly lacking in excellent episodes, The Laws of Gods and Men is one of those that really stands out above the others.
