"Game of Thrones" is a slog through fluctuating politics and random instances of gore with only brief moments of true excitement, when you can distinguish good from evil.

Overall, it's been a dramatic, but uneven season, and who knows where they can go from here, having upped all the antes that could have possibly been upped.

Not as graphic as last season's bloodbath down the aisle, the death count in last night's episode is a game changer, though perhaps not as surprising this time around. All men must die, sure, but do they all have to die at a wedding?

To my taste, the characters and their relationships are the primary draw for Game of Thrones, along with the political wrangling for the Iron Throne.

One of the ingenious pleasures of Game of Thrones is that for all the convoluted narrative twists, its 78 subplots (rough estimate) tend to unfold along user-friendly genre lines.

HBO's lavishly and expertly produced fantasy returns with a lightning-fast opener that skillfully, sometimes amusingly, and eventually violently resets the characters, putting them in place for the season to come.

Each of the actors rises to that challenge, whether playing opposite one person or a multitude of extras.

These packed curtain-raisers, like last night's "Two Swords," are rewarding for those who have read the books and somewhat maddening for those who have not, requiring multiple viewings and an open Wikipedia page.

Even in a show with more than 200 characters, pleasingly, there's always room for more.

HBO very well could hit the 10-season mark with what's become its franchise series. There's no reason to kill this golden calf -- particularly with so many characters still available to be sacrificed instead.

The season premiere builds to a satisfying climax - especially if you like violence, humor and revenge.
April 4, 2014
Along with Hannibal, this is the most joyous, at times exhilarating nightmare on TV.
April 4, 2014
One of the best shows of the last several years feels as creatively vital as ever.

This is a gorgeous spectacle. Aside from the Star Wars saga, I can't think of any on-screen story that creates such a vast, believable world out of imagination.
April 4, 2014
To me, the excitement of Game of Thrones, and the hope, exists in the margins, where the smartest characters often lurk.

Game Of Thrones was and is an astonishing achievement-a vast web of world-building and map-reading and politicking in made-up languages, while still relying on the close-up camera shot of a single actor's face to draw the most drama out of a scene.

Game of Thrones isn't afraid of change: It's the lifeblood of the series, and just one of the reasons we keep watching.

In terms of emotion, action, performance, visual storytelling and narrative payoff, Game of Thrones is the best TV show around right now.
April 3, 2014
As stirring in its action, as rich in characters, and more sweeping in scope as ever.
