Once you get used to the cliches, the loudly telegraphed plot developments and the unrelentingly phony look of the set, the show becomes watchable in subsequent episodes, thanks to a few of the key performances and some well-directed action scenes.

Gang Related... rolls with so many stereotypes and tropes it clanks. Or would do if it weren't so buried in gunfire/mood music.

Every minute that you keep watching, part of your soul festers and peels away. Somewhere inside you, a pained voice screams out in anguish at whoever could have greenlighted such a blatant display of yuck.

Gang Related ultimately confuses being grim with being sophisticated, and it too rarely stops to think about what it's trying to say beyond, "Man, being a dirty cop sure would be tough!"

There are many ferocious gun battles and nerve-racking car chases, but also the occasional odd moment of restraint.

Gang Related... offers up what feels like the dregs from the same pan in which many, many cop show predecessors, both better and worse, have been cooked up, including more intense series like The Shield or The Wire.

Whether Fox originally intended to air the series in the summertime or not, Gang Related works fine as the explosive diversion it sets out to be.

The real trouble with Gang Related is that it's so intent on being "dark" and "edgy" it forgets to be dramatic -- or in any way novel.
